Just said Goodbye to my RX-8
Just said Goodbye to my RX-8
I just sold my RX-8 a few days ago. It was an '05 model with the Sports Package. I was the original owner and had almost no problems out of it. Other people complained about low fuel mileage, burning oil, reliability problems but my experience was pain free. I averaged ~ 20 MPG and my only problems were a rattle in the dash that started around 15K that the dealer fixed under warranty (although it took them a while to figure it out they finally did) and two cracked sun visors also fixed under warranty. My Observations ...
Good Points:
- Fun to drive (especially good handling)
- Not very expensive (I also had an '95 300ZX which had an MSRP of $40K)
- Pretty roomy (although I disagree with others who think the back seat is suitable for regular sized or tall adults for more than very short trips)
- 9K Redline
- Very good looking cars and very unique
- wide opening when both doors are open making it easy to get large items inside.
Bad Points
- Limited visibility out of the rear when changing lanes (although consistent with most sports cars)
- Low Torque
- when I bought mine only black leather or some color combination of black leather was available (it looks good but I live in the South and think black leather is too hot).
I mentioned that I also owned a '95 300ZX, and '02 BMW 330i. Both of those cars were much more expensive than the RX-8 but all things considered I think it matched up well to those cars. My favorite was the BMW but again it was ~ 30% more expensive. I liked the torque of the 300ZX but handling was about the same as the RX-8 and the RX-8 was probably faster and had much more space.
Thanks to everyone for providing so much good information on this site!

For now I'm driving a RAV4 that I inherited. I don't know for sure what I'll get to replace it. I might go back to another 3 series but probably not because I think they are overpriced. Yes they are nice but they are a lot of money. I might change directions all together and get a new fully loaded RAV4 with the 3.5 liter V6 (minus the rear spare hanging off the back door if you get run-flats and the Sport Appearance Package). I know it won't handle anywhere close to the RX-8 but I have driven one and it is fast, fun to drive and versatile. We'll see...
Cars I've owned:
- '75 VW Sciricco
- '80 Honda Civic
- '85 Nissan Maxima
- '92 Honda Prelude
- '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee (V8)
- '95 Nissan 300ZX
- '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee (V8)
- '01 Acura MDX
- '02 BMW 330i
- '05 RX-8
- '98 TOYOTA RAV4, temporally driving until I decide what is next ...
- Next ?
Also, if anyone is interested I have (4) brand new with stickers still on them Michelin Pilot Sports for sale, size 225/45/R18. Send me a PM if you are interested. I prefer local pickup (in Columbia, SC) but might ship them.

[QUOTE=RotoRocket;3032980]What did you get for your '05?
I advertised it on cars.com for $15,200 and sold it after 1.5 weeks for $14,800. It was an '05 that I bought brand new in March of 2006 with 11 miles on the odometer, it was Titanium, had the Sport Package, 6 Speed Manual, rear spoiler, 27,500 miles, cloth seats, clean carfax, regular maintenance and all the records, the original tires and I estimate ~ 10K of miles of use left on them, no door dents, was garage kept and I also had an OEM car cover, 6 disc CD changer, and very, very clean and well kept. I was surprised it sold so quickly because I have sold other sports cars in the past and they took a while to sell in a good economy. The buyer was specifically looking for an RX-8 and think he wanted it right away when he saw how good of condition it was in.
I have sold roughly 8 cars on my own including mine, girlfriends, and parents cars. I research on the internet what other PRIVATE SELLERS are advertising similar ones for and price mine about the same. I detail them and get them as clean as I can get them, advertise and then wait. I might wait 3 weeks for a call (especially for the more expensive ones or sports cars) but I have sold every car except one to the 1st person who came and looked at it. The other one sold to the 2nd person who looked at it.

Thanks. Mine is mint w no scratches, dings or problems except the starter motor and battery were replaced under warranty.
Never flooded, and oil changed every 3000 miles with receipts.
It is like brand new. I will shoot for $14,800.

Hey good luck on the next car. Also, I completely agree with you on a 3 series, way too overpriced. And, when something breaks on that car, you have to pay a **** load for the part, it's atleast 2x more than rx-8 parts.
