I know this sounds really infant, because it is, but could anybody tell me the steps to waxing a car and what has to be done. I've never really done it and don't just want to glob a bunch of wax on it.

 

Like Mr. Miyagi said...wax on, wax off. No but really....just put your wax onto an applicator pad, then start applying in a circular motion. Let it dry and haze over then remove with a cloth.

 

that might not be good enough example.

i watched the Meguiars wash/wax series when i bought my car. i think everyone new to washing should. i use the deep crystal cleaner, clay bar, polish, detailer, and tech wax 2.0. this wax is the best i have used and can be applied in circular motion or side to side. it won't leave much residue either. just like in the video, after you apply wax to an area, test it with your finger to see if it you can swipe through it without streaking. if so, you're ready to buff off the wax with a microfiber. I love the three stage mequiars. Don't do a three stage everytime though. It does take some of the clear coat down. Oh and yeah totally do it in a garage when the car is "cool to the touch"

 

the one thing most people do wrong when waxing their car is not budgeting enough time.

Clay Bar / Polish / NuFinish / Wax = Jaw dropping results

 

Never do it in a circular motion. Always go front-to-back on the hood/trunk/bumpers/roof and up-down on the sides.

Beyond that understand that you either wax a car or you polish a car. You don't do both. Waxes tend to need precise, detailed application to painted areas and can discolor plastic parts. Polishes can usually be applied to anything that has a clear coat.

Watch that for tips on washing. Study up some for figure out what combinations of polish you want to use.

 

3 year revival. my friend just gave me his buffer (6K kawasaki rotary) and so i want to polish my car. obviously im not going to do it on my 8, but my beater car instead. how do i do this? i have ultra compound (1), machine glaze (2) and ultra fine machine glaze (3)...i just need to know what type of pads to use on each type of polish. the paint is in okay condition. my 8's paint is pretty good. what should i use?

i feel like a tard for being 7 months late to this party, but the most important thing you have to remember with using a rotary buffer is to keep plenty of compound on the buff and use slow speed while not staying in one spot so you dont overheat the surface and burn the clear coat leaving a nasty blemish thats only fixable by repainting the panel.

first timers shouldn't ever use an automatic buffer.

 

First timers can use a DA (Dual Action) with no problems. It's a very safe machine. That said, you still should learn the basics of proper detailing with it.

 

When I waxed my car for the first time I used blue shop paper towels and meguiars wax. Did it all by hand and it took two hours. Most painful experience with my car ever.
