I had my 07 RX-8 for less than a month now. Everyone says it has the best handling. I agree. However, when I make a turn and gas it at the same time. The rear wheels slid really bad, like a snake. I tried it couple times. It still happens. It was even worse when I tried it with DSC off. SO Anyone have ever experience this. I'm thinking maybe I should change the tires but this car has been used only like a year and a half. I don't know what happens here.

If I should change my tires, can I get lower profile tires. Thanks.

Could be your alignment is off. But yes that is how RWD works.

used to happen to me all the time lol. i went from awd to rwd you'll get used to it and learn to control it better as time goes on.

 

Also go to a local auto-x event or track day and play around with the car; learn it's limits OFF the street

 

but learning on the street is so muc more fun

Sorry... but this sounds really really.... newb for a lack of a better word.
You ARE supposed to accelerated out of turns, in racing anyways.
It just sounds like you're stomping on the gas expecting it to just pull into the turn. Well, it doesn't do that. It takes a little self-control, skill and timing.
In racing, you accelerate out of the apex of the turn, and if done correctly, you can feel your car pulling into the turn. It feels good when you do :]
And don't just stomp on the gas, ease into it. Feel for the car and the limit of it's grip.
And changing to lower profile tires give worse traction if what I'm seeing is correct.
Isn't that why everyone that races or autocrosses generally get 17"s and a higher profile?

 

I've had it happen but never with so many exclamation points !!!!!!!!!!!
slow in, fast out. Don't accelerate in the middle of the turn unless you want the rear end completely coming out.

Trust me on this next piece of advice: do not drive with the DSC /TC turned off. It's there to help, you have NO IDEA how many times members here have crashed their cars because they drove with it off.

 

...also some tires can be crap....the oems are ok but suspect esp. doing what you did..

 

True, but when people get 17's it's usually because they are lighter, cheaper, and tires are cheaper as well.

So now instead of losing your steering, you're oversteering. As others before me have said, practice with it on the track. Then when you get a good controlled oversteer going you'll have entered the world of drifting. Welcome to RWD.

Well the obvious has been stated above. Spend some time and learn the car, more finesse and less lurching makes for more control. But lets say your technique is no worse than the average Joe, what else? First check your tire pressures, when one end breaks loose unexpectedly that should be the first thing you do in any car, you may be low in one or both rear wheels. Second, you may need an alignment. Maybe now would be a good time to get a book on car control and handling dynamics and read it.

 

if you are getting you rear wheels / tires to slid badly with the dsc on you have some really big issues..

OP: Yeah also it depends on the location, I was in Cali on stock tires and never slid out, but out here in Nevada the roads are lined in sand and I got some stickier tires. It helped give more grip and better take off.

 

Aww Jedi this disappoints me. My car is a base model so no DSC/TC for me, never needed it and wouldn't use it if I had it. People depend way too much on that stuff...all ya need to do is learn to control the car better.
