ON Shout Box?

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned before.

On my old car forum (rdtiburon.com) they have a "shout box which is basically just a messenger box, where people can communicate through. It`s great for people to get to know each other, ask questions, and just have fun in general.

Any thoughts or ideas on this

I think it`s an awesome idea, and it may also cut down on repeat threads, like engine flooding, and gunk on your dipstick, if people can just come in, type something in the shoutbox, and maybe hopefully get an answer.

I think it would be a great help for locating things on the forum. it would be nice for the quick reference questions or if you cant remember the name of a thread your looking for.

There are plugins for vbulletin:

Try this maybe:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=93097

Or this... which is a real time chat box:

They wont use a plug in. IF they want to include a shout box itll have to be built in and come with an upgrade at some point in the future.

Zoom44, is there anyway we could ask them? or suggest it to them or anything? I don't know anything about the people who own our forums, so maybe I'm way out in left field here.

Huh? I'm sure they'd get an answer. It'll go something like this:

Response 1: n00b!
Response 2: Your engine is about to Blow!
Resposne 3: Get your Ark ready Noah, she's flooding!
Response 4: Use the search button, stupid n00b.
Response 5: Vtec, Yo!

All withing the span of about 3 seconds.

Shout-boxes aren't bad on small sites but are horrible on big sites. The worst of every forum uses them the most. And there's no way to move bad shout subjects into the Lounge.

no IB owns this forum and IB OWNS vBulletin. so there is no reason for them to use some outside plug in- if they want a feature they will just program it into vBulletin as an upgrade at some point.

It adds a chat window to whatever website your on. So, say, you are anywhere on www.rx8club.com you will have that chat window up there.

It's slow and buggy, but it's the only alternative you have ATM that I can think of.

Totally agree 100%.
We may be the only 2 w/ similar experiences, but I'm on several forums.
The forums that have a chat window at the top, have never had any helpful info that I can remember.

One site I'm on even has a link to the IRC chat room.
Their forum is very useful and people are always willing to help, but the IRC chat is useless when you need info.
Too many people chatting about nonsense, and telling others to search when you interrupt with a real question.
