I want to get a UK RX8 231.......But flooding, engine failures, cat....all these are big problems....and ive seen alot of people with them on forums. Should I get something else? A few people are telling me to go for the TT. Ofcourse they have their problems aswell....but at the same severity as the rx? Help me out! What should i do???

ive NEVER flooded my car, NEVER had a cat failure, my engine NEVER died...here i am 2 years laters, and 47k miles and the car still feels like its brand new

 

I've had my car car since May 06 and I've never had any problems with the car and I run the **** out of it.

 

50,000 miles of daily driving to work, running errands... and no problems.

Although I DID flood it once. Started it on a cold morning, turned it off after a few seconds to use the keys for my other car... came back to start it again later... and no start.

If I remember though, I THINK I got a new (upgraded) battery and starter from Mazda when it was towed to the dealer. So maybe it was something of a blessing in disguise.

But remember, people don't normally post "hey everyone, my car ran fine again today!" The posts about engine failures and things are the exception, not the norm.

 

If you treat it properly, and drive it like you stole it, then it should have a long life.

Very true guys....I know people wont post about how normally they drove back from work this evening. lol. I just dont want to be one of those holding there heads with one of these problems. From what it sounds like, flooding the engine is more of a niggly annoying problem rather than a major one?

I've never had it.. I believe most of those problems were ironed out by 06, but it can still happen if you're really careless with not warming your car up properly before shutting it off.

Just drive it around the block, get it as warm as you can before shutting it down.. If your coolant temp is not at operating temperature before you need to shut it down, rev it upto 5K or so and shut it off around 2k RPM.. Should keep you safe.

 

It's a totally preventable problem. Just don't turn it off a few seconds after starting it cold like I did, and... no worries

 

i personally know in real life at least 9 other RX-8 owners, andi do not know anyone who has flooded.

there are plenty of people out there who have, threads are everywhere - but i think its mostly all user error like Maries8 said

It was probably just BS but the dealer showed me a method of shutting the engine down properly after a short distance which was basically rev it up to 5000, hold it there and turn the ignittion off, the engine then revs back down to 0 slowly rather than just cutting out (supposedly flushing out the excess fuel).

Anyone else been told this?

That works, but most people keep it to 3500 rpm, to avoid adding more fuel from the secondary injectors.

 

i've made the mistake of flooding once, just hook it up on some jumper cables and keep cranking it over, foot flat on the floor for 30 seconds, it soon sorts it out. i drive a 230 bhp rx8, with a few mods and fairly high milage, and all for all, i've had no 'problems' but the cat was 'gone' when i bought it, so the dealer gave me £250 towards a new factory one, which i instead put towards a full stainless system and TVR race cat, suffice to say it only passes it's MOT at my local garage ;-) cos if u stand behind it too long, you will pass out LOL other than that, just a few niggles really, radiator warning light comes on intermittently when i'm on the motorway, and the engine managment light perks up if i've been out in it 4 a while but only cos of the emmissions nothing untoward, so in short, BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT !
