S2000 is dead

Honda just announced that they will stop production of the S2000 with no replacement for it in sight

http://hondanews.com/categories/1097/releases/4934

Its too bad,... it was a heck of a car, but it looks like all the fun cars are getting cut with the current economic climate.

This is a re-post. And the article only said they are holding off production on the new 2k for 2 years.

she will start up again if the economy is good in two years and the demand is there.

Huh... good read. Still, as Honda's only sports car, they're going to take a hit when they stop production

Honda sold a whopping 65 S2k in Canada last year. Still did better than NSX which sold about 5 in its final year in Canada.

Toyota doesn't even have anything that is remotely sporting... unless you consider the Matrix XRS is the incarnation of a Supra. And yet Toyota is #1 auto mfg.
In the next few years with the bad economy climate, "nice to have" cars will give way to multi-functional ones. 'verts are first to go. Then some sports cars etc....

doubt a few hundred S2000 sales is a 'hit' to Honda when they sell hundreds of thousands of Accords every year worldwide...

I seem to be the only person that is GLAD production is over. Just went too long without any true significant changes, so it's really killed the market value, but it is stuly a wonderful piece of engineering, and it will be back one day, so all is good.

you're absolutely right, but I don't think the RX8 can last 10 model of years of production like the S did without significant changes. Honda should have limited production like Mazda did.

the 8 couldnt do it... the 09 design might keep it alive another 2 years but I can tell it's going to lose to newer "competitors", especially the one's that go faster in a straight line.

Is that 65 as in sixty-five? Or maybe you missed 2 zero's?

Nope. 65 as in sixty five. The number between 64 and 66.

"Honda said it will end production of its sporty roadster, the S2000, this year, with 2009 as the final model year. Introduced in 1999 as a 2000 model-year car, about 110,000 S2000s were sold world wide. Only 65 were sold in Canada last year, down from 123 in 2007..."

Eh it wont die forever. The market is hot right now for lightweight cars pushing in the 250-300bhp range. Even Hyundai is getting in on the action. Nissan is working on remaking the 240sx, Mazda has the Miata and RX (although the RX will need serious rethinking back to its roots if its gonna live beyond 2012) And Honda has never wanted to back out of the racing industry all together, they just realize that the platform is aging and in need of reform. Thats good business. Don't sit on a platform that clearly is aging, and technology is beating. Build the newest craze.
