The news front for the Mazda3 just got a little hotter with these spy images snapped on the Nurburgring today. These photos not only show the 5-door hatch in the flesh, but the sporty Mazdaspeed Axela (Japan)/ Mazdaspeed3 (U.S.)/ Mazda3 MPS (Europe) version.

At the recent Australian International Motor Show, Mazda revealed to the media images of the all-new Mazda3 sedan with the announcement that it will makes its public debut in Los Angeles next month. Following soon after would be the 5-door hatchback. We believe this to be Detroit in January.

When comparing these images to the uncovered EU trademark office design sketches, details such as the headlamp shape, side mirrors, character lines in the hood, fenders and side body are exactly the same. Additional distinguishing MPS characteristics include the massive hood scoop, big sporty alloy wheels, sporty side skirts, beefy dual exhaust and rear roof spoiler.

So the big question for this Mazda3 MPS – what's under the hood? Rumors are indicating the 300hp 2.5-liter 5-cylinder turbo from the Focus RS could be in there or the same 2.3-liter turbo massaged from 263hp to 300hp could be the one.

Another question surrounding the Mazda3 - which platform is it built? Is it based on the same front wheel drive Ford C1 global platform as the current generation Mazda3 and Ford Focus. Or will it be based on the new C2 platform which is speculated to accommodate all-wheel-drive?

Either way Mazda has done a very nice job of translating their new design language, first seen in the new Mazda6, to the Mazda3. We expect further details to emerge closer to launch.

Gah, what's going on with that A-pillar in the first pic? Something is REALLY wonky looking about it. I think it's pushed really far back into the fender or something, that bothers me.

Hope it's AWD! FWD sucks!

The most badass hatch ever just got even more badass. I feel like I've just been Falcon Punched.

For as much as I love the Speed3 though, I wouldn't give up one of my cars for it. The new 3 with the 2.2 diesel, on the other hand, would really put me in a bind...

if its awd it'll be a HUGE turn of events. Plus with the U.S. not getting the focus RS this will fit right in.

WOW! Go Mazda! The next MS3 looks like a winner!

Fingers are crossed that they add the same treatment to the next RX!
I would be happy if Mazda gave the next RX 260HP minumum , make it light weight, and beef up the chassis and suspension, all wrapped in a sexy aerodynamic body, and they will have my business for sure.

if its awd i will **** a brick.

i dont think it will be, i think its still fwd and its going to be a fun little car. but it better bring the heat, cause it'll be competing against the cobalt ss.

No one talked about the hood scoop?

I am glad they ditched the intercooling idea on the speed3 and 6. If its a TMIC, might as well just cut a hole in the hood.

I am pretty sure we will know if this car is AWD or FWD, or the photographers might already know judging by how it turns.

I would place my bet on AWD. Since they now have experience on the AWD drivetrain with CX-7 and Speed6.

if its awd, it would be nice, but i doubt it. awd is heavy and expensive. if mazda wants to compete with the cobalt ss's cheap price, they are going to want to keep costs down as much as possible.

hood scoop is very nice, gives it a good aggressive look.

i like the tire monitoring system they use. camera + thingthatattachestothewheelstuds. maybe they are using it to check suspension travel?

I've translated the license plate, using my Ovaltine Decoder Ring:

HG 06250

Hit Gas

0 - 62 in 5.0 seconds.

It is too bad Mazda does not make this with RWD. AWD would be sweet but FWD would keep me away.

Anyone know why they are only measuring suspension travel on the rear wheels? AWD? =)

probably to see how much the back squats down. more weight on the back means less traction up front for the driving wheels.

they might have just been fine tuning the rear suspension that day.

Looking good (less minivan-ish). If this car was AWD I would highly consider it (for a daily) but I can understand Mazda not offering this due to the weight, complexity and price.
