Art On Wheels

Once in a while, a car comes along that is so beautiful, it's as if the hand of God had sculpted it:

What is it? an Alfa? That looks like their styling.

They are always good looking cars.

Too bad it doesn't perform nearly as good as its price tag.

Yes, it's an Alpha Romeo 8C Competizione, and I agree that it's pretty expensive at 200k.

From a styling and design standpoint, it's a supermodel, though, IMO, especially from the side and rear profiles. Pure beauty...

it's sexy yes, but the maserati granturismo looks better. Do you guys all share the same opinions as Jeremy Clarkson?

Meh, like the Alfa better than the Maserati, I posted pics of the 8c a long *** time ago and have been following it for quite a while, that is, until I saw how much they were going to sell for. I can think of many other cars I think I'd rather have if I had that kind of cash to throw around even though the Alfa is quite a gorgeous car.

edit: I'm not digging the Maserati front end/grill at all. ^

Alfa can sure make some beautiful cars inside and out but too bad modern ones never perform or drive as good as they look.

Have you seen one in person? The sheer size of the thing and presence it has is crazy.

In 1996 and it was a 164 sedan or something like that. Read/Watch anything about most any modern Alfa that has been published since I could read and they are just not known for their all around performance but like I said always one of the best looking cars throughout the years IMO. I don't know what you mean but I gather Clarkson didn't like the way the 8C drove/handled?

0-60 in 4.2, 1/4 mile at 12.4 at 115.7. 1.02 g lateral acceleration 60-0 in 105 ft. top speed of around 190. Yeah, it's a dog.
I'm sure there are faster cheaper cars, but it's performance is not too shabby.

I know what the stats are for the Alfa, but the top speed I believe is 182mph. I don't know if you follow Top Gear, but Jeremy said it "handles like a Mustang". It lapped the track in the wet with a time of 1:38.2. To give you a reference, our RX-8 lapped it in 1:31.8, same time that a 350Z and M3 lapped the track in. Yes, those stats from the 8C Competizione suggest it has the super car potential, but all of that means very little if it gets around a track slower than cars far less than a 1/4 of the cost. Top Gear's test track isn't the end all/be all of benchmarks, but there is no excuse for something that cost that much to be down so far in the lap records.

The styling comparisons should be made... 599 GTB.
The Alfa is nice, but I'll take the Ferrari.

I saw my first Gran Turismo this morning. I didn't think it was that special. I mean it looked good but it reminds me of a Jaguar XK. Which is lame.

If i saw the Alfa i probably would have crapped my pants. I think that thing is sweet, however, not worth the price tag.

At the end of the day, I'm with this guy.

I'm a big Ferrari fan - I especially like the F430 and yes, the 599 is nice (except the nose).

But the Alpha 8C is just so much more...what's the word? Ethereal?

The side and rear profiles, especially, take me to a higher place. It's just a thing of exceptional beauty.

The granturismo looks like an XK? Then what about the Aston DB9?

The 599 is menacing, but I would hardly say it's the prettiest. I mean, it has more wheel gap than my girlfriend's Saturn Vue.

And wheel gap is a definer of car beauty?

Art on wheels, eh;

The only aspect I don't like on the 8C is the nose.

The trait that is unique and beautiful above all else is the incredibly short overhang beyond the rear wheels - they nailed that.

I can't think of another car with a similar design in that respect, but if you guys know of one, please post it.

again... to quote JC...

Here's your short rear overhang.

btw the SUV style wheel gap and all of the slats and cuts are what make this car not pretty. It's not ugly by any means, but not pretty/elegant like the aforementioned cars in this thread. The way this car looked on the Top Gear review was like a shell that was just plopped onto the car.
