i didn't want to be one of those noobs who just posted without searching, so i searched and read, and learned.... i understand that redlining daily keeps the carbon build up from happening... however i have a different question.

I'm looking to buy an 04 with 66k miles on it and i was wondering if i should worry about potential carbon build up? could i simply burn it off by redlining when i get the car or would that do serious damage.... i would tend to think that could do damage if i try to redline when there is a bunch of CB in the engine..

mainly my question isn't how to stop carbon build up from happening.... it's what to do once it's already happened and what if there is A LOT of it..

you can always seafoam it, or add cleaners in the gas tank or take it to the dealer for decarb, i guess.

 

Depends on the dealership.

04 66K miles, MT or AT.

if its AT, I will tell you to stay away from it as far as you could.

If its MT, well, have someone that knows RX-8 to go look at the car with you.

Yes Mazda will do the recalls....
Do the seafoam.... Let the car warm up beofre you go redlining it....
You shouldnt have too much trouble I would say. I have an 04 MT original engine with 113K on it... Still drives like new.

 

Mazda will generally perform a recall if the car is not under warranty, like a computer re-flash you are thinking? But those are more service bulletins, I don't know if you could call them real recalls.

You can rev the engine up, and you should, that is what it is made for and that is where the wankel lives. Just make sure it is warmed up and be gentle on your transmission, I see a lot of people just pile drive it at high rpm, and I don't think that's too good Speaking of carbon though, just driving hard will keep it down, don't worry too much about it. If you are concerned that it is carboned up now, just go take it on a windy road and run it hard, again no harm, I am sure the cat can handle it .

You should probably be more concerned with changing your oil grade or all the other need to knows about the rotary.

nycgps is totally right about the autos and you should have someone who knows the 8s, if you can, go with you. My 8 was my first car and I thought I knew what I was doing and I bought a car with a failing transmission.

I bought my '04 in Nov. '03. Welcome! I'm an old dude and don't red-line it, but I love the 2-lane roads. Do you have the orig. engine or has it been replaced? Mine is original...but again...I am pretty easy on it. My understanding is that you need to avoid synthetic oil and regular gas. If you have the original battery, you need to upgrade it when it dies (it probably already did). Hope you enjoy your purchase.
