I am new here.
I have been looking to buy CAI in buy/sell forum for couple day already. It is very hard to find. So I am thinking just to use drop-in filter with OEM air box. I did "better flow mod" with it, thank you RX-8 club for instruction.

I need recommendation for replacement filter for OEM air box.
I did the search already but no result.

What brand would you recommend? K&N, Green Filter, R-Magic, ITG or any other brand? (I saw ITG banner here)

I found out that K&N drop-in is popular here. Any reason to go/ not to go with K&N?

Also what material would you recommend? Cotton, Polyester, others?

K&n w/ your flow mod and did you remove the vfad? that will give you cai sound, i love mine!

 

I have the green drop in air filter and it works fine same as the k&n air filter. Just remember to get the cleaning and re oiling kit.

 

i have the K&N drop in with the better flow mod and the RB ram air.. it works really nice. and just a tad bit more hp

I went to Mitsubishi Eclipse G4 Club for same question too since new filter would also used for my girlfriend ride. (Most people recommend CAI…. I think Eclipse seems to respond very well to CAI, unlike our 8)

People there recommend Green so I did some more online research and found reviews said that Green is better that K&N because Green does not have any wire mess to support its structure, therefore gives better flow.
Any comment about this?

How about our site sponsor? Despite, I never heard of ITG brand, I found out that ITG filter is quite popular too. Their filters are used in many F1 and WRC car.

I still have no clue for any JDM product like R-Magic.
I could not find R-Magic website and distributor.

All brand above cost around the same $50 +-10. So no price differentiate here.

Oh! Also clear OEM air box mod too. Have anybody try that?

R-magic works great, I have this one and I am very satisfied. Notable sound difference in high rpm plus it's dry, no need to oil and very easy to clean.

 

Before forking over much extra $$ for a fancy filter for the OE box keep in mind this will do absolutely nada for performance over an OEM filter. There is so little restriction in a good clean OEM filter to be virtually immeasureable.

Anyone who promises otherwise is well.. hasn't measured the OE filter.

i think its the material that helps.

plus a K&N filter last the life of the car , if maintained properly of course.

 

i decided to cut the cost of a drop in filter and put it towards a CAI

I'm using the Green filter that I bought from Corksport. In terms of airflow performance, it's more or less the same as K&N (remember the OEM filter is quite good to start and more airflow from the aftermarket filters has negligible effect). I decided on an aftermarket filter vs OEM because the aftermarket in the long run will save me money! The reason I went with Green is because the plastic border molding of the filter has a more intimate fit with the airbox so particles have a lower chance of sneaking around the border. Also the fact that it's a cool GREEN color.

 

I think the drop in filters are somewhat over-rated, especially in a daily driven car. The primary function of an air filter is to filter... go figure. The amount of extra flow you'll see going with a K&N or something similar is pretty much negligible, but I've seen tests (not specific to the RX8's filter) indicating that they filter out less particulate than a traditional cotton filter. A lot of people run them, and it's probably not that big of a deal, I just prefer having a little peace of mind vs. the 1/2 HP gain at redline... plus I like playing devil's advocate

 

I have a green filter, wih No regrets. the only thing I have to compare it to us a stock filter, adn ell no butt dyno impression really, btu along with removing a single scren adn the baffles, I e a bit more sound, and perhps a bit more air.

o me, the biggest benefit is acually that for under 200% the price of an OEM filter, you get a lifetime filter. Any performance gains are a benefit beyond that.

a CAI on this car typically are ll sound, and in MANY cass degrade the perforance. I plan on getting an AP at some point, and the word on the street over there, is that NA, stock is king.

The only advantage I know is the theoretical one that there's no danger of over-oiling and fouling the MAF (I have no idea how much of a risk that really is with the Green or K&N).

Whether it filters better, lasts longer, or flows better, I don't know.
