Low oil lamp....
Low oil lamp....
Hey guys,
I've heard that if your oil level gets too low, there is a "low-oil lamp" light to alert you to fill oil up way before damage happens to your engine. Now, I usually check my oil level, but because I have that "milky white substance" problem on my dipstick, it's hard to check the oil levels. So, I usually go to the dealer every two weeks to check the oil level. Btw, Erin Mills Mazda has the warranty part to fix the milky white residue problem, but it's been on order from Japan for almost three weeks now cuz it's on back order apparently. So, until this has been fixed, if my oil ever becomes low, will I get a low-oil light on my dashboard, so I can fill up oil before any damage to the engine occurs?
Thanks and God Bless you guys!
Ben.

You should look in your manual, and if you don't have a manual, you can download one for free ay www.mazdausa.com in the owners section.
So our cars do have an oil level sensor, just a very crappy one.
Yes, it was perfect after I filled it back up. Haven't seen that light in 2 years now, since I remember to check now
It's in the gauges, it's just an indicator light. At first I thought it was a coolant light, but checked the manual, and what do you know...it's actually an oil indicator light.

If your really paraniod you can fill it upwards of an extra quart.
It wont harm anything, rotaries aren't like piston engines which have a crank, pistons, and other do-dats splashing around in there. it's just a resevoir.

Or if you're lazy, you can do what I do. Drive until the light comes on (or 4000km), then dump in a quart and that should last you until the next oil change. I don't even bother pulling out the dipstick anymore since it's such a pain in the *** to do in the dark.
In the summer I take better care of the car, but this winter is so brutal I'm in no mood to hang around in the garage.

oil consumption
I find on average I need to add about 250-500 ml of oil every 1000km.
The consumption varies on the driving style. The more agressive you drive, the more oil the metering pump injects in to the engine.
Avoid driving short distances, let the engine come to temperature to avoid condensation buildup in your engine.

This practice will make your "engine" light come on and will stay on untill you burn off the excess oil.
