Radar detectors in Canada

Just wondering how many of you are running radar detectors in Canada (in Ontario/Quebec/Maritimes)? If you do, how do you deal with the "detector detectors"? Ever get caught?

If you buy a good detector........like the BEL Sti Driver........then the 'detector-detectors' can't see it. It ain't cheap but it works great---and no, I have not been caught.

I know a guy who recently got caught with a Valentine One. Since almost nobody has a radar detector it's pretty easy for the cop to figure out which car has it if he has a detector-detector.

Got caught on the highway. Copper said, "Why did you even have one, you weren't even speeding..." I was doing a little over 120km. He knew I had it because I touched my brakes so he said...

Anyways didn't get a ticket. He said he wasn't going to give me a ticket but I had to give him my radar. Sucks!

Now I have another one and have yet to put it into my RX8...

Can't you deny having one? Put it in your glove box when you get pulled over.. They aren't allowed to go through it right?

Keep a $50 decoy available for just such a circumstance.

If your not doing anything illegal the cop cannot go through your car unless he has

1) your permission
OR
2) search warrant

Usually the cop will try to trick you by asking if he can search your car you have the right to say No and it would take them a long time to obtain a search warrant

Then he gives you a ticket for speeding and anything else that he can come up with...

I'd rather give in and walk away happy...or drive away happy...

Thats why you get the STI driver. Undetectable unless you mount it in plain view. USER error is what will get you caught.

True, unless you have something in your trunk that you would not like the cop to see

The legality of a Radar Detector is Provincial.
For instance in Alberta Radar Detectors are legal, also you are not required to have a front license plate, and there is no law against N2O.

I drive faster than the speed of light so I needn't bother with a Radar Detector.
<cough cough>

TheWulf is prolly a copper anyway or listens to way too much The Wolf FM radio.

Anyways Wulf there are loads of threads about radar detectors on this forum try a search.
You can also try this website http://www.radarbusters.com

Not that I know but if I wanted to research information on radar detectors or perhaps purchase one to experiment with this is where I would go.

I guess he didn't want me to know that he could detect my detector

So true, he said hand over the detector and I said I don't have one... Of course he knew so I then gave it to him plus he said he wouldn't ticket me. Thank God he was nice about it...

you post just answered my question....i have been wondering why cops took their radar detector cuz most of my friends in calgary have radar detectors. I didnt really get one cuz i think i know where the most risky roads are in calgary. last time when i rented a car for a trip to Jasper, i actually bought one, i remember that was the passport one but dont remember what series number is. anyways, i was on the way back to calgary at night and driving about 160 with a shitty GM grand AM, suddenly my radar detector warned me and after about one sec, the cop truck at about 500 meter front of me turned on his lights warning me something. he couldnt pull me away cuz he was at the other side but its weird cuz my radar detector only found out the copps when they were about 500 meters away and i bought the most expensive one from london drug. after i came back, i returned it cuz i wasnt satisfied with it.
