High Rev When Parked

This is the issue - I have a RX8 GT 2007 Automatic - this started before Christmas but only does it intermittently - whenever I start my car - parked in garage - and let iy run for maybe 1 minute then shift gears to reverse and my foot on the brake pedal the rpm on the car suddenly goes from normal to 4k and above as if I am pressing on the gas pedal - when I put the car back to park it stops and I shift it back to reverse all is normal.
I brought it to the garage and they could not find anything wrong with the engine - it stopped doing it for about a month but again today while getting out of my garage it did the same thing.

Anyone have a clue what the problem might be?

Thanks

That's kind of weird, if you put the car in reverse and the engine revs to 4k do you feel the car trying to roll back against the pressure of your brakes? IF you don't, then the tranny has not engaged and the engine is not loaded and the tranny is about to engage. This is normal if your car is still cold.

However, if you feel the car trying to reverse against your braking force, then that is not normal and you should get it looked at.

Its a common factor for cold starts. When I put mine in gear when it is cold it can go up to 2k rpm and I live in Vancouver where we have mild winters......

^ I agree. See how it is when the weather is warmer. Probably just fine.

it's not normal. The car shouldn't be reving at 4,000 rpm. The cold start rev should be under 2k.

...says the man who lives in Florida.

No seriously though, we've all had it start above 2k on very cold days. That isn't news. What's weird thing is that his jumps to 4k after he puts it in reverse.

If this is normal, then it sucks. I wouldn't want the car reving to 4k when it's completely cold.

And I don't regret leaving NJ. Snow and lack of sunlight don't work for me

If it only revs above 2k for a very short time, I would think it's a function of the very cold temps. Otherwise, might be something to look into.

I've had the 4K rev before ...when i started the car. Not after I put it in gear.
