I can only tell you what I learned about my rx-8 today. My check engine light came on and stayed on for days on end. I knew that a gas-cap left off or left loose could account for the light coming on. I tightened the bejeezus out of the gas cap and it did nothing.

Turns out... my 3.8 yr old gas cap had ceased to make a good seal with the opening to the gas tank. It was "seeping" fumes or losing pressure - doing something that the computer picked up on and reported as a CEL.

Spring for a new gas cap and see if that does the trick. It's cheaper than an engine ))

First stop should be a code-reader ($90 approx) that can read the info from the computer - make sure you buy one that can handle the new CanBus protocol.

Then you can stop guessing......

If your RX8 is completely stock and has absolutely no mods, check your gas cap, it may not be properly tightened or it doesn't seem to be operating up to what it should be. Chances are, that's the reason of your CEL. I had the same problem with my Mazda3, there was something wrong with the mechanism so they had to replace my gas cap.

If it is moded, find out the code and check it out using a scanalyzer.

You can see what the code means here:

Isn't there a key on /key off cycle that will allow you to read the code numbers via blinking CEL lights?

my old 97 car you'd key on/off 3 times then the light would blink like moorse code for ya.

I don't believe so....You now days have to use and Scan Tool to pull any "Check Engine" codes. Not like the old days. everything getting more advanced. Computers control most of the cars now!

There is a TSB for the gas cap though. If it is the cap, they should replace it for you for free. I'm on my 4th one now (they had a bit of a problem getting one that sealed properly!).

Well, usually a CEL means your car is going to blow up. You better sell it ASAP.

OR.... you can take it to Autozone, they have a code reader there that they'll let you use for free.

I have the original gas cap ('05 model). From the day I bought the car, I've never been able to tighten it (the way other gas caps on other cars tighten). Instead, it tightens a little, and then just clicks, no matter how many times I turn it.

Is this normal? I would think my gas cap is defective and should be replaced with the redesigned one, except for one thing: CEL has never come on. What gives?

If it’s not throwing a cel, it must not be leaking. So I guess you don’t need a new cap.

i had to have mine replaced a few days ago since it kept throwing a cel, small leak

My '07 had the light come on because of the gas cap.

But it did not go away after tightening. I had to take it to the dealer to reset it.

trick to tightening gas cap. hold straight, tighten slowly. Click 3 times, STOP.
You're all set.

That's exactly the way it works. Turn till it clicks a few times, you're done.

Correct. If the problem is the gas cap, replacing the cap won't make the CEL go out right away. I believe it takes a couple of tanks and on/off cycles. Since a lot of CEL events are intermittent, and the light will go away after a few cycles, it is nearly impossible to tell what's happening without reading the code.

The gas cap problem applies to a specific range of VINs. They're listed in the TSB.

FWIW - When my 8's CEL came on because of the gas cap (P0455), I did not see the light engage in any sexual acts, so I suspect the OP's problem is something else.
