Dumb lady slammed into me a month ago doing 40 in her avalanche. Her truck had to be towed but the mighty shinka drove away all smashed to hell up. Her insurance paid 12,000 for the repairs. I've always heard, "Once wrecked, sell it" Anyone got badly rear ended and kept their car without further problems??

I had >10k damage after being rear-ended last fall. No mechanical damage other than a bent control arm, no issues since. As for the bodywork, it really depends on who you take it to...

 

First, can 12K cover the repair cost with extras left into your own pocket ?

If yes then, sell it

If no, contiune,

Can 12 K cover the repair cost alone ?

If yes then, sell it

If no then, sue them for more, fix it, then sell it.

 

40mph? What was her excuse for attempting to kill you? "I was busy talking on my cell phone?"

I saw an video piece on 5th gear a while back, where they bought cars that had been in wrecks and crashed them again. Apparently, once you smash crumple zones, they are hard to repair, and some shops take shortcuts in the process, so it looks new, but doesn't afford as much protection.

I don't know how true that is, or how well a proper repair job works, but it's something worth researching.

 

You can maybe take it to another shop and ask if is safe or not. I't your call , most likely I'll be ok.

 

Dollars add up fast. Depends upon if it is cosmetic damage.

I would take the easy way out and sell it.

 

Unfortunately I've not had major rear-end damage like you've experienced - 40 mph WTF!

Its a tough call since its a Shinka. I agree with a few of the other posters here - get it repaired by a VERY GOOD body/paint shop and see how well it drives. The fortunate part is that the front end/steering was not affected by the crash (right?) meaning that it *should* drive pretty well when repaired.

Of course, if it wasn't a Shinka edition then I would just sell it and get a new one. It all depends on how well she drives after the repairs.

But I completely understand how you feel. The darn thing is tainted now and not the same.

A poodle was crossing the road ahead and myself and thee 2 drivers on either side of me stopped for the dog. The fat B*ch in the avalanche was putting on her mascera and slammed right into me. Freaked me out as my eyes were on the dog ahead and I didn't see her until I got slammed. The replaces the right rear tire but left off the center Mazda logo hubcap. Also the satellite radio and CD don't work. So I've got a few issues to sort out

You need to ask the insurance company for diminished value compensation.
I know the question on everyone's mind is... did the dog survive??????
As far as selling it goes... have them check the structural integrity. If it's been compromised, get it fixed and sell it. Keep pictures of everything because the prospective buyer will be interested in the severity of the accident. Having pictures and receipts will give them piece of mind.

 

If it were mine, and I really loved the car, I'd sell it… and find another one. I'd always be worried that the car won't be quite the same. And anytime any little "thing" happened—a squeak, a rattle, a groan—I'd wonder if it was a result of the accident.

Fortunately, 8's are not very popular and resale value ins't high, so if you can find another Shinka with low miles, it shouldn't cost too much. You can probably find some leftover new 8's that some dealer will be happy to get rid of. I bought my new '05 Shinka (12 miles) in Feb '06 for just a tad over invoice. It had been sitting on the dealer's lot (along with two others) for over a year. Or… maybe this is a good excuse to buy the 40th Anniversary Model.

 

I would keep it as long as you can. Even a bent frame can be fixed as good as new.

As for the paint, that too can be like new. The hardest thing is that you need to let the paint breath for 120 days. What that means is you can not seal the paint (no waxing). You can apply a polish as long as it allows the gases in the paint to release, you just can not protect the paint from the elements.

So why do I say keep the car? All that information has now been reported and you will take a loss (yes even with a Shinka) if you try to sell it.

Wish I had seen your car before repairs. Any frame measurements? Did the estmate state "Set up to measure" "Pull to align"? Did the airbags deploy? Was there a wheel alignment performed? The insurance co. will tell you they can repair it like it was. Buts that BS! It all depends how bad was it damaged. $12,000.00 is a fair amount of damage.

 

I feel your pain - some biyatch side swiped me, damaging my driver's side rear door. Your advantage is you live in Texas. The state of TX recognizes what's called "diminished value" - the carrier pays you the difference of what your vehicle would of been worth, and what it is worth now. Review your claim to see if this was accounted for. It may be worth looking into. An extra couple grand helps ease the resentment you're experiencing.

 

sorry, architect, I just noticed u suggested looking into the diminished value. So, +1 on pursuing this avenue... I vote keep her. I love my CR.

 

You want to put some soft, sticky tires on the car and watch the tire wear pattern carefully. This tells you all you need to know about the health of the suspension and chassis. If the tire wears funny, get rid of the car.

 

CR Shinka's are now on the endangered species list.

SELL IT! here's why: if hit was more major than a simple bumper replacement. minor bumper bender, than most likely the body may have shifted in relations to ur suspension. taken some autobody and suspension class, you'll notice more the accident cars on the road that "dog track" where the thrust line of the drive line is off centered. some cars are very obvious if followed directly behind and it seems as the car is drifting.

bottom line is if you had to have a suspension component changed, its bad enough for me ( and to honestly highly recommend to you personally) to sell the car and not keep. also consider this: suspension parts are thicker and stronger than body parts, right? so if the suspension moves and bend, then so did the body. forget about keepin it for the simple fact that its a shiinka. i've always wanted a copper red but ended up with a red 07. the only difference is only the color and the foam injected front cross member. don't make that ur only reason to keep it.

no amount of alignment and pull will make it "as good as before". for christsake, if you love the car...do yourself justice and get another one and paint it copper red! the "special 08" is basically another shiinka model but in dark grey with the same foam inject crossmember...

sorry to make long. but if you've ever considered racing the car, minute physical imperfections can really show up. i.e. when you get wide wheels, why does only the tires stick out on this side more/less?

i can go on and on and there are not enough reasons to counter why i "should" keep the car if in the same shoes as you.

trust me. own enough used, salvaged, accident, repaired cars then you'll understand why anyone will not keep a car that has gone thru an accident more major than simple bumper repair.... ask urself, would you buy ur car? i wouldn't

what climacus suggesting is for the same reason. to see if the thrust line is off. but even though, i think its still a more forgiving approach.
