warranty question
warranty question
This is my first car that came with a warranty so I have no prior experience with warranties and what could void them. Anyhow will changing the oil yourself void the warranty? I think some mfgrs will say it does but I dont know how Mazda handles it.
You can change the oil yourself. It's illegal for a manufacturer to specify who does the maintenance work.
But you have to prove it was done. Make sure you buy the oil and filters at a place that gives you an itemized receipt, and save those receipts.

Thanks Ken. So if I stock up on oil and filters I will only have one receipt for that period but can do multiple oil changes after that. Then how would I prove I did it? Does anyone else her change their own oil?

I'm letting the dealer change Zoomy's oil for the first two years, since it's free. I have been changing oil myself in my other cars for the past 40 years or so. If my back is still working when that's up next year, I'll begin self-oiling.
Zoom44 mentions a logbook. He'd know what it takes to satisfy Mazda. I've always kept a log on my cars. Just a small notebook that I keep in the glove box, and write down the date, mileage, service and cost. I really need it for myself, so I can keep track of what was when, but it should serve as a record. Definitely keep track of when you change oil, and do it in some organized way.
A Honda dealer told me that it's not really necessary to document oil changes, because when they tear down a broken engine it's obvious whether the oil has been changed regularly. I wonder how that philosophy would have worked for Toyota owners who experienced the engine sludge problem.
The owner's section of the Mazda web site has a place where you can record maintenance.
