one hand steering experiment question.

I've been experimenting with one hand driving techniques. I've been trying to determine which driving setup is better, right hand drive (used in UK, Japan and Australia) or left hand drive (used everywhere else).

Note: I’m right handed.

When I drive, I usually steer with my left hand and control the gear stick with my right. But I also notice that when I drive an automatic, I steer with my right hand and rest my left arm when I’m cruising on public road.

So the question is. In the perfect driving position, at cruising speed, should your “Preferred Hand” be on the steering wheel or the gear stick?

Which also comes to this question. Which is a better driving position for a right-handed person, Left hand drive or right hand drive?

PS, i can drive both.

PPS, the reason i'm asking this is i'm trying to determine if i should keep my current RX8 or trade it for a japanese import.

Wow!

Just Wow!!

Both hands should be on the wheel is the answer to all your questions.

That is one of the craziest things I've ever heard someone say would be a determining factor in deciding what car to get.

Ha ha...thanks for the laugh though.

Actually, at consistent speed, i find that i control the car better with one hand instead of 2. It's the sudden change in speed that require me to use 2 hands. i tested on the track once and i got better control when i drive one handed. then i test a few times on the road and the results where the same. Try it. safely of course.

However, if you where been a political correct jack ***, then point taken. also note that it's impossible to keep both hand on the wheel when driving stick.

I drove my friends Nissan R34 and he offer me a trade. he said the only proper way to drive is right hand drive.

If a car were better controlled with 1 hand rather than 2 then why is the only time a professional race driver does not have 2 hands on the wheel is to change gears?

Go to a track school or driving school - from the few I've been too I don't think I remember the part of any of those classes where they teach single handed driving skills.

"also note that it's impossible to keep both hand on the wheel when driving stick." - really? wasn't aware of that!! I meant keep both hands on the wheel all the time EXCEPT for when changing gear. I would have thought that was obvious.

Oh and please tell me where I was being "a political correct jack ***".

Both hands on wheel at all times is the fastest at all times.
No exception.
If your "inside" hand isn't steering, it damn well better be grabbing a gear or pulling the brake.
Adjusting the radio, resting on the stick (which makes it grind, anyway), using the phone, picking your nose, chomping a burger, diddling your passenger or scratching your *** should all require immediate revocation and amputation in my kingdom.

Obviously, we all have things that need to be adjusted, set, calibrated or controlled while we drive. Just realize that you are, realize it or not, severely impaired when you are doing those things. Both hands on the wheel equals more focus, let alone more control.

if you want to start a flame war, i'll flame with you.

if your actually read my post, you would notice that i never said anything about racing. not everyone that buys a race car have a need to race. I'm talking about cruising speed where one hand is rested and only one hand is needed to control the steering wheel. I'm talking 50km/h at most. If you seen some of the drifters techniques in real life, you will notice that some drivers sometimes use one hand to control the wheel and the other to control the gear change. I find it interesting and like to learn more about it.

and you where been a jack *** by laughing at me and making fun of my post without actually understanding my question. If you have nothing good to say, don't post. you jack ***.

We did understand your question, jack ***. Pay attention to the answer.
We don't care how and when you are driving.
We know you are not racing - you obviously don't have that kind of skill.
Try not being a jack *** and calling people "jack ***" in your 9th post on a forum where you have asked a question.
Jack ***.

i think the right hand drive would be better, although it can be potentially dangerous if ur making a left turn and u cant really see oncoming traffic

and it means no more drive through food unless u have passenger

Ha ha...flame war? Yeah that's what we do here....all the time. The Canada forum is renowned for it's epic flame wars.

No need, thanks for the offer though. Oh, and I'll even ignore the name calling too.

i dont see any difference from having the drivers side on the left/right.

The only difference is that your gonna have allot of inconvenience on the right side. Its not practical. just think, what if you go out one day and have to park in a parking lot. How are you gonna grab your parking ticket? how are you going to pay the person at the exit?

the only reason i could see someone prefering the car to drive from the right side (in North America) is because the person is under the delusion that this is cool.

dude, you don't want to be on outside of the lane while you're driving. it's fine to be on the right of the car when the lanes are opposite. but no one expects quality driving from the mailman.

was this a serious question? if i'm not mistaken, it's also illegal to have a car with the backwards set up on a normal road ... unless you're the mailman.

Ooh. My Mom's basement. I never thought of that.
Next time I have an erection, I'll see about a resurrection. Though, she never had a basement while she was living.

I don't understand why you would go through all that hassle if you already have basically the same car. If it was another car that wasn't available in North America then I can see why you would want to import one.

Well, if you weren't such a jack ***, you would realize that the jack *** that started the post wants to drive like a jack ***.
Seeing how jacked his *** is over being a "racer", I'm sure the original jack *** has thought through just how ludicrous importing a JDM car to the NA market is.
Jack ***.

I'm gonna go cry myself to sleep in my mom's basement now. If crying doesn't work, maybe my preferred hand and some lesbian **** will do the trick.

maybe a mod can split this up into two threads...1 with the original topic, and another for mazdamaniac to fight with everyone and call everyone a jackass
