Are the cabin temps unbearable down there in the summer? Im in the northeast now and i cant get my air cold enough in the summer to counteract the heat thrown off this car aka "center console coffee warmer"

Secondly, anyone hiring project managers down there? haha

 

it gets pretty toasty, I don't know about unbearable but pretty hot. I'd say you'll get more pissed off at traffic here than the heat, holy schnikes it's gotten crappy over the last few years

 

im coming down 4th of july weekend to check out some areas to move to and see real time traffic and what not. Anyone want to suggest an area that i should drive through to check out traffic patterns? And yes i am intentionally getting into traffic.

 

It depends on where your workplace will be (if you'll have one) and where
you think you'll live.

Try driving IH35 during rush hour traffic (7-9AM, 3-6PM). Same goes for
Loop 1 (MoPac) and Hwy 183 to/from Leander. There are more but these
three may convince you to stay in PA...

 

Traffic on the weekend is not near as bad as during the week. The key to avoiding the trafic is to travel before 7am or after 6:30 pm. I drive Mopac everyday from south Austin to Round Rock and spend at least 1 hour on the road in the afternoon at 5pm. Wish I lived closer to work!! The new toll roads help a little up North.

 

Ill be flying in on thursday and out on sunday so ill get both. No job yet, mainly moving down becuase the little woman can make a killing in TX (pharma) as opposed to the more expensive less paying north east. Ill be looking for jobs closer to Jan.

 

Have fun while you are here. I am heading down to the coast that weekend to do some fishing. Other than the traffic, pretty good place to live and definately less expensive than the north east. Depending on where you work you can usually find a good place to live somewhat close as there are pretty good options north, south and west.

 

I love the ocean any and body of water for that matter so map wise i was looking in the western parts of the city, maybe the travis area. Any thoughts?

best advice there, period. Keep in mind though, if you can swing a house instead of renting, do it, it's worth the commute to have something that appreciates compared to paying rent and lving closer to where you work. If you can swing a house, and be close to work, that's pretty much the perfect setup around here

Funny, I agree with this 100%!! Although I moved to Austin from the Bay Area (San Jose) the traffic here is not as bad as in CA.. Of course, like others said, leave before 7 if you live far away from work.

The ONE thing I noticed here is that some the %$# HWYS have LIGHTS!! Mopac, 360, 2222 have LIGHTS!! and that by itself creates more traffic...

The lights don't have motion sensors and the roads were not designed to absorb the number of people that are moving here.

This is where I believe that by not paying State Income Tax the overall quality of roads and public works is not as good as other places.

On the other hand, it's a nice area to be either single or to raise a family.

What traffic?! I work dead mans hours and it's all smooth for me! I agree though LA traffic BAD. Austin isnt really that bad, but if there is an accident thats when the **** hits that fan. You could be stuck for hours. But at least we dont have smog alerts HA!

Im fairly sure i can deal with the heat, china in the summer is 110 with 11% humidity. If i can take that for months at a time im sure i can take austin. I just have to stay indoors all day

 

Austin got voted the worst place to drive in Texas in a recent poll, even beating out places like Houston etc. I don't remember where I saw it, I think it was Texas Monthly poll or something

Im flying down to Austin this weekend and checking out round rock since that where the womans relatives are. If anyone nows of anything especially cool give me a heads up. I figured Austin would do a first friday art thing like most other major cities.

 

Not sure why everyone complains about Austin traffic. If you get on I35, or Mopac during rush hour, it's just like getting on 610, or I10 in Houston. I avoid most of the major interchanges and don't really have any issues but I do live relatively close to work. I don't have to cross town drive as I typically just stay north.

Round Rock is a nice area. Plenty of different ways into town and lots of stuff out there. Housing prices are very good too (in comparison to the rest of Austin).
