I've been discussing with someone a position to work in Herndon, Va and wanted to know how was it there. What is housing, or apartment life like, etc. Things to expect for a newcomer from the midwest. Any feedback in my research would be great!

If the job pays well, then living in this area is not bad at all. Northern VA has one of the more expensive housing markets. But, I personally enjoy living here. In the form of museums, culture, entertainment, night life I think the DC Metro area can match any major city locale in the US.

Good access to racing tracks as well. Summit Point (WV), Beaver Run (PA), Wall (NJ), Virginia International Raceway (Southern VA), Maryland International Raceway (MD drag course), Capitol Raceway (MD drag course)

If you want to live anywhere close to\in Herndon you are going to be paying a lot like the others said. I don't know what part of the Midwest you are from but I know that some places out there you can get a huge house with lots of land for around 300,000. That much will get you an okay 1 bedroom condo in Northern Virginia. If you are looking to rent that costs a lot too.

Just take that in account with whatever salary they will be offering you. That with the traffic and gas prices might not make it an upgrade as far as income.

Life definitely is a lot of fun out here though and if you don't mind commuting you can get a place an hour outside of Herndon that will save you some money.

 

I am from KC. I did a cost of living calculator and it stated everything was essentially the same. Checking rental properties alone gives me an idea of what my salary requirement should be.

in the d.c. area, a salary of $200,000/year still puts you in middle class. (albeit, at the top.)

the d.c. area has one of the highest costs of living around the usa. insurance in the d.c. area is also one of the highest in the us.

Ill make this easy for you...

Expect rent in the herndon area to range betweel 1600 - 2400 /month depending on location and size of the apartment. Be prepared to pay about 3.35/gallon for gas out here for premium and also expect your insurance to go up as well. Apartments out here VERY seldom come with utilities included so keep that in mind.

 

I work at a townhouse community in Herndon, VA actually. We have 2-3 bedroom townhouses with garages for rent and they range from 1700-1900 depending on size. So it's not as bad as people are leading you on to believe right now.

 

I know but comparing that to 800-1200 for a nice 2-3 bedroom with garage.

Hehe, when I lived in Blacksburg, VA I was in a 3 bedroom townhouse and my part of the rent was around $250.

 

Just expect traffic to suck...........alot

 

traficcmis horrible both in VA and DC areas so patience is essencial.
