sputter, flash no sputter, 3 hours sputter

I took my 04 with 22k on it to the dealer to check for a newer flash, to clear a CEL, and to find out why I have a cut out feeling 3 times in between 7 and 9k, hung out with tech, he said he didn't know, guessed plugs, told him they were new, he flashed it anyway...drove down the road woohoo...like a striped *** ape...happy smooth acceleration all the way past 9k (whoops) I mean like a rocket...faster than ever before...drove it for about 40 minutes, noticed the high rpm miss faintly and slowly returning...after a day or so it is back as usual, but came on slow...wierd...so in summary new flash meant fast nice running eight with no other changes only to have same old problem return slowly? Searched, read, no info...guess and suggestions welcome. CEL is back on...don't know why yet.

it could be the coil.. it is also possible that your mazda oxygen sensor might be bad.. it could also be a vacuum leak, burnt valves, plugs need cleaning and gaping, a plug wire short to ground or the distributor cap or coil shorting.. try to check these things and update us what you observe..

Usually high-rpm misses are from burned points or bad dwell settings.
Check the wiper fluid and make sure it isn't turning blue. If it is, you might want to go and have that changed.
I don't think it would be the valves, though the valve springs have been known to float at high RPMs.
Adjust your lifters for less lash and see what happens.
