I have owned my 8 for about a month or so. I LOVE it. It's probably one of the greatest cars I've ever driven, and I have driven a lot.

That being said, I did the math and figured I spend an extra $168 a month on gas over a car that gets about 20 MPG. That's kind of a lot. Has anyone heard of people selling this car for this reason?

 

It does get 20 mpg.

I get 20mpg on the highway, 18mpg in the city, and 8mpg on the track.

Exactly how many miles are you driving a month and at what gas mileage if your say your differential with a 20mpg car is $168/month.

Assuming you're getting 18mpg in the city and you are paying say $3.30/gal for premium thats: 50 gals per month more you're burning than a car that gets 20 mpg (168/3.30).

So if you're buring 50 gallons MORE a month than the a 20mpg car (which is 916 miles) exactly how many gallons of gas total did you burn this month?? Are you using the 8 for a taxi?? If not you may want to check your math.

16-18 mpg is par for the course for any of the 30kish sporty cars. I did worse in my evo, a bit better in my c230k and am fine with the 8s mpg. Granted my fiancee's civic si *great car for what it is* gets 27mpg no matter how you drive it, it doesn't provide the same viceral and rewarding driving experience as the 8. If you want to play, you have to pay for the gas. No comprable car in the segment is going to be night and day better on gas.

The only exception to this is my dad's mazdaspeed mx5. Terrific car, decent power and great mpg! That said, if you need to bring more than a sack lunch with you every day your SOL, and have fun with the wind noise (top up) and lack of refinement. Also, you better pray the person in the expedition distracted by their kids, dvd player and cell phone sees you in that little thing!

 

i get 200 mpg on my goped and about 100 mpg on my mini bike...

 

I have a 75 mile round-trip commute, and figure I'm spending a skosh over $100 more per month.

I don't know how people are getting 20mpg from their 8s... I'm getting about 14mpg on my mixed highway/city commute.

It's a bummer, but even though the miles per gallon are down, the smiles per gallon are up. It's worth it to me.

If you read his post again it seems he's implying that he's getting worse than 20 mpg because he said he'd save money if he had a car that got 20 mpg. I'm going to take a wild guess and say he's one of those RX-8 owners getting around 15 mpg.

 

I get about 20 (just under or just over), too.

Exactly. Objectively, it would take you years and years to recoup the costs of selling or trading your RX8 for another car... if only for the reasons of gas mileage. Calculate how much you pay for gas now, and compare it to a different car that gets better mileage.

Now compare that money saved to the money you will lose when you sell your car, and buy a new one. It's a no-brainer. Even with a Prius it would take years to realize any savings.

Some of the guys here aren't very nice. They're pretty sensitive about the MPG thing on this forum. Don't let it bother you.

My RX-8 (with premium fuel. I know you can use regular, but it says, "premium recommended, so I use it)

Amount of gallons a month =

52 miles / day * 20 days / month / (13 miles/gallon) = 80 gallons / month. 80 gallons / month * 3.50$ gallon = 280 dollars per month

Perspective New Car (thinking an Audi A4 or S2000)

52 miles / day * 20 days / month / (22 miles/gallon) = 47.3 gallons / month. 47.3 gallons / month * 3.20$ gallon = 151.4 dollars per month

Net savings: 280 – 151.4 = 128.60 dollars, or $1,543.20 per year

PS: I DID do my research. I was figuring between 15 and 19 MPG, depending on how I drive the car. But driving the car below 4K RPMs is just boring, and even that doesn't get me much more than 13 MPG.
