The RX8 gets terrible mileage in traffic, right? My conclusion is that the engine doesn't like low RPMs.
I try to keep the cruising revs between 3K and 4.5K
Shift points. around 5K in normal driving (after warmup) and 7K+ in spirited driving.
I use 91 octane.
Mileage drops a lot in winter and in traffic and improves on hyw trips in the summer.
My low is 15 litres per 100 km and my high is 10 litres per 100 km.

lol...the reason i don't want to shift at 3-4.5 k is because i want to stay outta Boost(HAHAHAH)....
i was wondering that too....like shifting at 2.5....maybe the engine dosn't like the low RPM and tends to bog down more..THUS using more fuell....

200 is a bit low. Are you in a lot of stop and go traffic? Obviously, if you're you're on the highway, you're going to get higher mileage.
I usually shift at 4000 and cruise at about 3000.
I noticed your name is TurboEight ... do you have a turbo? --> that could be affecting your driving style (ie temptation to push the car and WOT runs)

I do very little city driving, I would honestly guess 95% of the km are highway (and therefore higher speed), now that its getting nicer out, my last tank lasted me 434km and I dont run it to fumes either, the light came on just as I pulled in to the gas station. I probably could have squeezed another 50km or better out of it.. but I'm not that brave to test that theory

does shift TOO low affect mileage too?

yes i do...lol..but i m kinda trying to get a better feel for the car running at 2.5 vs.3-5.....
and see how the mpg changes....
hmm..so can anyone answer if lower rpm shift actual hurt mpg?
Wow, If My 8 was turboed I would be playing and driving spiritedly a lot. My assumtion is becasue we have a small engine with a low tq rating if you shift too low then the engine has to work harder to move the car; underreving the engine. I usually shift around 4k and I usually get between 375- 450km per tank consistently with mixed driving. Lwest I have ever gotten was 300 and I was driving spiritedly for extended periods. I use 91 or 94 octane, not sure about using 87.....makes me nervous having owned modified turbo cars??. Id rather use a higher octane and pay the extra 10 cents and have peice of mind .......if there is such a thing with a rotary engine
I think you are finding that you are using to much fuel from not being in the power band.
To low of RPM and the engine is below it's torque range. I believe max torque is 5200 rpm. Now if you are lugging around all day the engine will have to work harder to get the car moving. Thus using more gas. Increasing the mount of uncombusted fuel. Plus the fact of possibly fouling the plugs with carbon buildup. If your plugs are coated with carbon from putting around then the spark will be deminished. Increasing the amount of unburned fuel. Thus causing more fuel to be used to move the car the same amount. Resulting in poor fuel economy. Higher RPM's = better combustion. Rotaries like RPM's I drive between 3000 and 6000 RPM. Try running at another 1-2000 rpm and see if it doesn't make a difference. Rotaries like to spin. And hit the Redline at least twice a day.

boosted with octane booster i got from canadian tire...makes my car go around 98hp faster.

Shift at 2500 rpm?
200km per tank?
You have the wrong car - dump it.
Waste of a good rotary if you ask me.
RPM's do NOT = BOOST level.
BOOST will only come from throttle position.
Get yourself a Prius and save the world.
