CEL this morning.

The CEL came on this morning when I started my car.
I stopped by the dealer and it turned out to be the gas cap which was replaced under warranty.
Apparently they use smoke to test this...

ditto, i just had it done for my cx-7 darkbrew. I didn't see a 'smoke' test though

Same here. I just picked my car up yesterday for a cell. They replaced the gas cap and everything seems ok so far. It was under warranty also.

Last time I went in to have my tires rotated the dealer replaced my gas filler neck and cap as a recall item. It wasn't throwing a CEL but there must have been problems.

The TSB for the gas cap (MSP13) specifies that the cap should be replaced based on the car's VIN. No tests, and they even say that they will not cover any additional diagnostics.

The tech at my dealership wants to prove there's something wrong before they replace something and not just replace a part because there's a TSB.
I understand the approach but it can be frustrating to go there to hear that they can't find a problem, then demonstrate it to them then bring it back so the tech can have another look to confirm then wait for the part then bring it in again for the install...
But the gas cap CEL was one trip last summer to clear the CEL and this week to clear the CEL and replace the cap.

I wouldn't want to be the guy who had to smoke by the gas filler/cap.

I like it when they (dealer) can actually fix something on the first visit. Not 5 visits later. Not every time you go the problem "Cannot be duplicated".
God I hate that.

Looks like your in Lousiseville and I'm in Phoenix.. Long way away to hear a ticking from the back window.
I have a Master Tech where I take my car. But it never makes the sound when I take them for a test drive.
Drive over here and listen for it.

I would be taking my car somewhere else if my gas cap was tested this way!There is a set of diagnostics built into the WDS which tests the Evaporative emissions control system.If you wanted to test the gas cap alone,there is a simple vacuum tester(used when you take your car for the smogg test).
