Mazda to increase production by 15% and sell Hydrogen/Electric Hybrid by 2008
TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Mazda Motor Corp plans to increase by fiscal 2008 domestic production by about 15 pct from the fiscal 2006 level and introduce a hydrogen-electric hybrid vehicle by that year, the Nikkei business daily

Mazda will give details of plans to increase production capacity and focus resources on green vehicles in its medium-term business plan to start in the year to March 2008, which will be announced tomorrow.
The Nikkei said Mazda plans to run its two domestic plants at full capacity. At its Yamaguchi Prefecture factory, it is set to upgrade painting equipment, which has been an obstacle to increasing output. Domestic production, which is estimated at 990,000 units for fiscal 2006, is to rise to 1.05 mln in fiscal 2007 and reach 1.15 mln in the following financial year.

As it says the business plan will be out tomorrow. I hadnt heard the paint booth was such a bottle neck. I guess its the last to get their more eco -freindly 3 layer wet paint system

hydrogen-electric by 2008?!?!? thats pretty crazy, and it should be the hydrogen renesis! it'll def be a JDM only car... and even so, who would buy such a car?

I have only visited one plant, the NUMMI in the Bay Area. Tacomas and Corollas spend nearly half of their 24 hour production being painted. It takes a long time to make it perfect; the rest of the stuff is quite simple. But then again, Toyota is known for its production line, so maybe they have streamlined the process more than others.

GREAT news Zoom!! I know 2010 seem realy far out but it's about when I'll be ready for my RX-9.
I know "enhanced power" can mean one of a million things but it's nice to continue seeing signs from Mazda that the rotary will live on. (hydrogen, TC, SC, who knows.... )

INTERESTING....But....personally I just cant see how Mazda are going to more than halve the RENESIS 'CO2' emmissions...without a duel fuel or hybrid as IMO it is impossible on just gasoline alone...
Even BMW boss said that NONE of Europe's luxury brands can meet the NEW 2010 regulations...

As far as the "Screw You" Info, YES , Mazda NA growth/sales has been PATHETIC, when compared to all other nations, China is an obvious massive growth market for Mazda.
Much of the rest of the news is not that NEW, we already know of the Mazda 5 RE Hydro..
What is interesting is the claim that Mazda are going to improve HP of their Hydro rotaries by 40% and better KPL economy... well they need to as the present generation is just not commercially viable, or consumer acceptable.
The rest of the news has either already happened or just Promo-FLUFF..
The "improved" 4 Banger economy engines sound interesting and the domestic Idle Stop System.
But very interesting Charlie..

I bet we will see a 2009MY (at some point late next year) Mazdaspeed TC RX8 before they introduce the next "rotary engine", with a limited production run, there is really now downside for Mazda.
I want to hear about the Kabura, I've always felt if we didn't see a prototype car this year that the odds of production go down, we have one more "concept" yet to be seen this year, let us hope its a polished prototype MX-3 at the Toyoko Autoshow.

I just finished reading the article. It seems to me that they really wanna develop the rotary engine for burning hydrogen. From the enthusiasts' pov, wtf, we dont care. Hydrogen imo will only get more attention in the future, even tho it really sucks as an ICE fuel. no doubt there will be more funding put into hydrogen research, and if mazda's focus is to develop a hydrogen RE, this research WILL benefit gasoline rotary engines. for example, if they look into a 15B 3-rotor configuration for hydrogen, i am sure the cost to do more research on one that burns gasoline will be MUCH MUCH lower.
Edit: They might even getting fundings from an outside source, ie. Japanese government. Mazda should be ahead in hydrogen development in Japan, RE gives them a huge advantage.

Thats 220lbs! If Mazda can do that on the 2 then hopefully apply that same technology to all of their models, thats huge.
