Syncro's and shifting

Anyone ever use second gear before shifting into first?

For example: While at a light, you shift into second before you put it into first.

It's a much smoother shift.

No clunking.

I actually did it a few times yesterday, and there was an improvement, but not enough for me to do it on a constant basis. I'll give it another whirl when I get my car back from the bodyshop.

yes much smoother that way. but then its almost habit that when i brake, i blip up into the torque band when downshifting, continuing to stay in mid-upper rpms as i work my way down the gear box.... pointless habit i know, but it actually has saved my *** a couple times helping to avoid being hit.. if i had been braking in nuetral, or even low rpm ranges, i couldnt have moved fast enough to avoid accident

While it is true that it makes the 1st gear shift smoother, it's needlessly wearing the 2nd gear syncros. I've been told by 2 dealerships as well as AAMCO transmissions that any extra shifting or play on the shifter that it's needed will either wear the shifer (assuming you just shake the the shifter back and forth aimlessly) or unnessicary (sp?) wear on the transmission.

While it may not seem like a lot of extra shifting at the time, just think about it...it means that you are wearing the 2nd gear sycnros twice as fast as any other gears. I can tell you from previous experiences too that the 2nd shift syncros are naturally the ones that wear the fastest anyway, so i wouldn't really fuel the flame.

I love the feel of the linkage shifters like those in an AWD Tranny...very smooth. I love driving the Evos and MS6 for that reason. Shifting into every gear is smooth except if you don't rev match and listen to the Center diff jumping. The RX-8 tranny has an ok feel but is a bit notchy. Don't compare and old tranny to a new tranny because of cause it will totally feel different. Drive the 350Z...smooth shifting and tranny isn't as notchy as our 8s.

we all have a right to our own opinions. if you dont hink so...you're a moron.

Razz,
Yup, I do it all the time! It's a habit I developed when I had a Pontiac Fiero. It was damn near impossible to get into 1st gear without going into 2nd gear first. It's much smoother that way.

My statement was simply made in reply to yours...

Yes it is. How so? By comparison.

It was simply an answer to your question. Had nothing to do with another's opinion. Your barking up a tree that it's even there.

However, while on the topic...I will agree with you that personal preference would definetely play a role there. Oddly, I recall one of the MS6's mediocre points in C&D and R&T reviews to actaully be...the shifter.

what the hell are you talking about? my 8 is smoother than my bmw 330. the only thing that was tricky was realizing i didn't have to push right while going from 5th to 6th. it's just straight down. and really, a 350z? shoot. how dare you. you should be stripped of your 8 immediately.
