must be a brand new tire, since Continentals own website doesn't have the specs yet, if these tirerack specs are correct, that is a pretty amazing weight savings over the stock tires.

I just happen to be perusing the tirerack when I stumbled across these.

I can't make any comments as to the performance, but I liked my Continentals on the Mazda6 I had.

 

Holy crap, and I thought the 23 pounds that 245/40-18 Advan Sports weigh were light. The SportContact 3s even in the 245 fitment is only 21 pounds. A tire's weight is not it's most important characteristic, but if reviews of this tire are good I might need to ditch my preference for Yokohamas.

 

That is a pretty large difference in weight. Pretty amazing, I'd like to see what those can do.

 

Maybe it's a misprint.

Anyhow I wonder if the sidewalls hold up.

that's significant unsprung weight reduction, should be noticeable handling improvement

My current Pirelli's are 21lbs in a 225/45/18, so I think it is possible, but I'm going to contact Continental today and ask.

With these tires, you really almost don't need light weight wheels, unless you just like the look I guess. I happen to like the stock wheel design, hence my search for the lightest good tires possible.

I hope the improved the tire. The conti's I had were total pieces of crap. Wore really fast and traction was never that great.

Those stock tires on the 8 though are really heavy, just about anything is lighter.

 

This is going to be a great tire from what I've read. The contisportcontact 2 is also excellent, while the original contisport contact did indeed suck.

You have to expect a high rate of wear for a top summer tire, Umbra. At best getting a better wearing summer is going to give you 5 k mi or so, but the performance difference will be significant, afaik.

Personally, my favorite tires are the B'stone RE 050, the CSC 2, the Avon Tech M500 (for a cheap alternative), the TOYO T1-R, and the Dunlop 8090 (although for the price this one is just not worth it at all). I want to like the Pilot sport and SO3 pp, but these are too loud.

I can't wait until my 040's wear out - this is loud tire too. OTOH, it's hard to fault otherwise, the grip is excellent, although not as good as the 050.

 

That's the runflat version. The normal "Mercedes" fitment is 21 pounds.

Mercedes means it's an OEM fitment for some Mercedes model or other. It might be a normal tire that they wanted to identify as a Mercedes OEM fitment, or it could have differences in construction and/or compound that Mercedes requested.

Very much so. But if two tires are comparable, then the lighter tire wins. Weight is definitely not the deciding factor.

 

I'm getting some wierd info on this tire per continentals email from a customer service rep. She said the 225/45/18 was 22.xxlb and the 245/40/18 was 11.xxlbs, obiously wrong.

I called Continental but wasn't able to get any better info. We will have to wait for the tires to hit our shores to know for sure. I'll check back in about a month.

I trust tirerack's numbers as they weigh it themselves, rather than use the manufacturer's numbers.

 

I realize the wear issue, but when you can chirp the tires going into 5th gear they suck.

 

What (not completely worn out) tire have you done this with in an RX-8? I don't believe you, unless you were running a summer tire when its really cold or on ice.

The RX-8 doesn't have that kind of power.

Even completely worn, almost any tire will have good dry traction when its hot out, because of the very high contact patch.
