DIY: cup holder insulation

I just finished the install and it will be a couple weeks before I can say whether this actually works or not. I removed the stock insulation and replaced it with a heat barrier from ThermoTec. http://www.hi-impact.org/ryang/modif...8_console.html has the full write-up if you want to try doing it yourself.

You can also see a complete list of DIYs I have at http://www.hi-impact.org/ryang/modify/modify.html

The entire site is down for an unknown reason. I'll check into that this evening. Thanks.

OK, it's been a while... DOES IT WORK? I'm thinking about pulling my center cup holders apart and doing this.

Thanks!!

Any word on how well this mod works? I know it's been a few months since the last post on this thread but I'm curious...

The insulation is to deflect heat from the cup holders, not keep them warm.

On sort of an off-topic thing:

Has anyone found a cup holder liner that fits into the RX8 cup holders? Mine get dirty on the bottom often and I wish I could just pull em out and rinse instead of digging the dirt out.

Haven't found such a thing. I'd suggest a napkin or paper towel in the bottom.

...or you could do what I do: don't drink in your RX-8.

Ha I wish! I pretty much live in my RX8 and I have a severe coke (a-cola) problem. I've tried the napkin before but it just looks messy and unkempt to me. Guess I'll keep searching....

Thanks for the response, though!

I did the insulation a few weeks ago. I can notice a difference. I haven't taken any temp readings with a thermometer or anything but the ice in my drink doesn't melt as fast and I don't feel any major heat radiating into the cabin

Off topic, I know, but would using Thermo-tec or similar material to insulate the cold air intake box help keep air temps down?

Seems like an easy mod.

Did the cup-holder insulation last week ... with mixed results. It certainly delays the cup-holder compartment from getting hot, but eventually it does. I think the best solution would be to prevent radiant heat from getting to the bottom of the center console in the first place. I don't know how much space is available between the tranmission housing and the bottom of the console (to install the heat barrier there) --- I'll check the next time I'm underneath the car.

I've seen some single-cup/can pelteir coolers I'd like to try and mount in there to actively cool the drinks.

Any feedback on the underside possibility ? I always believed it easier to install reflective heat barrier between underside of vehicle between it and the transmission housing. Have not heard anyone indicate it was physically (and reasonably) possible although from my brief look under the vehicle it would appear it can work in that way.

it has been a long time since anyone posted on this, but I definately like this idea. I think the heat in the cup holders is killing the battery in my Ipod. And if not, it still is mad hot. Useful if you are drinking coffee or hot chocolate, but otherwise a major pain in the ***. Any word on how to help this short of thermal taping the body above and around the cat?

I just did this, sorta. I don't know how much of a difference it will make, but anything has to be better. The default insulation was so inadequate that it was charred in place. I pulled out the center console and wrapped the front cup holders in a cut out from the sunshade and secured it with the tape. I also did a flat cut out that I placed under the front storage compartment and secured that with tape as well. Make sure to not leave any holes. It needs to be a solid shield.

Supplies:
1x Aluminum Tape
1x Cheap ($6) Sunshade (Similiar to http://www.bestautobits.com/images/Silver_Sun_Shade.jpg)

Wow, I'm glad to hear this is normal. I was really freaking out when I found out how hot the cup holders get. I could really feel the heat radiating from them.
