DIY: Matching Stereo Volume ****

I've never been thrilled with the stock stereo volume ****. Not too easy for me to get a grip on. Here's an easy mod that took me less than an hour:

I hardly ever use that ****. I almost always use the volume control on the steering wheel.

Here's the word from Blue...

Clue 1: Get extra ****.

Clue 2: Get duct tape, scissors, pliers, hack saw and sand paper.

Clue 3: Saw the **** in half (so that it doesn't stick out too far).
Sand the back of the **** flat and smooth.
Use pliers to tear out the inner plastic section so that the **** can seat deeper.
Cut many thin strips of duct tape.
Fix duct tape strips onto inner circumference of the ****.
Continue building up layers of duct tape so that the **** will fit tightly onto the volume control.
Push the duct taped **** firmly onto the volume control.

That's all there is to it. If you ever get tired of it and want to go back to the skimpy volume control, just pull it off.

The steering wheel volume is nice and I use it a lot, but when I want to make big adjustments quickly, I always use the ****.

While I've had the extra **** for well over a year with plans to do this mod, its been sitting around all this time until this morning when I finally decided to do it. (So you've only missed it by a few hours.)

I had been apprehensive about taking a hack saw to the ****, but after seeing that rotary shaped volume ****, I finally decided to do this.

Why don't you use the steering wheel volume button? Nice mod, though...

I was saying that I use it a lot. But there are many times when I need the volume adjusted more quickly than the steering wheel button works.

One of my frustrations with the system is how the software is programmed to ignore **** inputs when it is turned too quickly. I'm sure that this is an intentional feature so that you don't inadvertently blast your ear drums when you hit a bump while your hand is on the control. But it seems really silly to limit the rate for turning the volume Down!

The fat **** mod works so great that I can't see myself ever going back to using the skimpy stock one.

Hey, here's a thought...
Maybe the reason why people are using the steering wheel rocker so much more than the center volume **** is because the stock **** is such a pain to get ahold of. The Fat **** is so convenient that I'm finding that I'm using it almost exclusively! Your hand is right there by the shifter already. Piece of cake. No fumbling around. And it looks great!

Clue for Mazda:

Make the Fat **** standard for the '06.

I like Blue. He's a good passenger. He even tells me when I'm driving too aggressively. He jumps off the dash and hides under the seat!

I'm even thinking of naming my car...

...and to all the duct tape "snobs", you can always find something else to do the trick. Like glue, if you want to make it a permanent fix.

I wanted to give this mod a go in a reversible way if I decided that I didn't like it. And duct tape happened to have a perfect amount of sponginess for a tight friction fit.
