DIY: Mazda OEM RCA-Input Install

OK.. this is a JDM part from Japan. GK3A-V6-590

Can be purchased from MazdaParts.com for around $ 75.00 .

Now this unit was ment to plug into the JDM T.V. tuner in the trunk that is installed in Japan. The T.V. runs to the back of the Head Unit sends video and audio to the HU and LCD. At some point we may be able to get into the Head Units input but right now I am using this RCA device to extend one of my Inputs on my Avelectronics box in my trunk.

So first step decided where your going to put it. Mazda suggest you drill a 2 inch hole in the back compartment with the DVD unit. But I wanted mine up front and i did not want to drill a giant hole.

Now you need to remove the center console to make this install easy.
And you can do a search here to get the low down on removing that.

I am assuming you can get the console apart !

Take the 3 screws out of the back of the unit. So you have 2 parts. set aside.

Next remove the front half of the center console and lay it on a soft surface. Get out a 1/2 inch Drill bit. Locate the spot you want to mount it . And drill a 1/2 " hole for the connecter to pop thru

then flip it over and stick the connecter in the hole. Line up the unit so its snug and flat. Then lay the old backing form the RCA unit back over the hole. You can use this as a template to mark the placement of the screws.

After you have lined it up make three small holes for the screws. You sholud have something like this.
Note my top screw used the edge of the same 1/2 " hole for the connecter.

Insert the 3 screws and tighten.

Next step is to plug in the wires now. you will not be able to get you hands in there after its back in the car.

Now take the foam rubber ring off the back half of the RCA unit and mount it under the cover . Without this the unit will look unfinished as the cover is raised just a bit to allow rotation.

Now you can remount the center console in the car and run the RCA units wires to your unit. In my case I ran the wires thru the center tunnel to the trunk. There i will cut off the OEM connecter and solder on RCA's. No pics of this yet.

Thew...I must say...after all the crap we've been through regarding this unit...this install looks amazing and is brilliant....the best part is now you can use it for the Audio/video in and eventually (once we figure out the head unit ****) we will have the ability to hook in to our Nav Monitor and Sound directly...

Those who want an OEM look for their audio connectors (non-nav or nav owners) should seriously consider doing this install...it looks beautiful!

So where does the pin connector go? Into the back of the stereo, or into the back of the mock-DVD player in the rear console (TrueMagellen has the DYI on that).

This piece was originally designed to plug into the Japanese TV tuner that is located in the trunk (hidden behind the lining on the right) of all JDM RX-8s. It provides RCA Audio (L and R) and an RCA video.

For the US market Thew modified the part with RCA connector leads so it can plug into the AV electronic switcher www.mazdaparts.com sells. This way US cars can use this unique OEM audio/video input.

So if I just had, say a non-iPod MP3 player with audio/video out...what would I need? The Gk3a-v6-590 for RCA L/R/V inputs, then I get a little lost from there. There seems to be so many options.
Do I need this Mazda RX-8 firmware upgrade? (http://www.mazdaparts.com/ProductDet...000-1112606399)

If so, it says it comes w/ "PIE MAZ/AL aux input connecter and 1 ALp/RCA cable". Are those these items respectfully:
http://www.mazdaparts.com/ProductDet...000-1112606399
http://www.mazdaparts.com/ProductDet...000-1112606399

Then I still need the AV Electronic switcher (one of the below)?
the big guy - http://www.mazdaparts.com/ProductDet...000-1112606399
the basic - http://www.mazdaparts.com/ProductDet...000-1128838719

Finally, if I just wanted to do audio, would it be the same as above just without the AV switcher? Cuz that switcher is pretty expensive (along w/ the car itself's $660 a month) heh

THANKS!!

Let me try to help

First lets check your firmware. Press the 'text' and 'preset1' button simultaneously until a number flashes on the LCD. If it is 9.55 or higher you do not need to upgrade the head unit.

Second the Gk3a-v6-590 will simply provide you with an OEM LRV RCA input 'junction box' I guess you could say...this is an accessory/option that you may want to consider for total integration but it is not required.

You are right on with the rest of the info!

Those two links for the PIE aux in and rca cable is what you need. If you do require a firmware upgrade we have a combo package for upgrade, pie, and rca cable...please tell us if you are interested as it is huge savings.

Then you can decide on which av electronic unit you prefer.

The full switcher (the big guy) gives you multiple audio/video inputs and multiple audio/video outputs (for on Nav plus extra monitors). An RF remote controls all of the different inputs and ouputs. The big guy also has S-video input which provides a crisper picture with slightly better color representation than the composite inputs.

The basic version only handles video...one primary and one secondary that is switched for backup cam usage.

Feel free to read my DIY for more info on how to install/etc. (click on link in my signature)
