Don't worry, I did something like this to my S2 steering wheel(via a Wheelskin leather cover) and he hates it.
It's just 9k being 9k.
Fun fact: the RX-8 Jeremy Clarkson drove in Top Gear also had a steering wheel that looks like the one OP is selling.

Trust me, I won't be making a profit on it even if I did sell it for $400. I was even considering spending the 1k to get a new one from mazda at one point. But I found it on ebay for 450, because it was ordered by accident, the parts guy meant to order a brown leather one.
