Take this with a grain of salt, it is from an internet car blog, but the author claims that once upon a time, there was a prototype Mazdaspeed turbocharged RX8.
Gotta love the hood vents
From the article: "There are a few oddball prototypes down here, including this Mazdaspeed RX-8, which is interesting because there never was a Mazdaspeed RX-8. This prototype was turbocharged, and in turbocharging it Mazda had to move where the intake was, and moving where the intake was screwed up the engine somehow, so it never made it into production."
I knew they built cosmetic Mazdaspeed cars that showed all of the dealer bolt ons and accessories, but this is the first I had heard about a turbocharged one. IIRC, there was a supercharged one with a strange hood scoop. Perhaps that one was made after this one's engine difficulties?
Yeah Mazda built a few marketing cars. But that car is not one of them being LHD, not a real MS bumper, etc.
Mazda has an independent design team in that very office, the same team was responsible for each of the Miata concept cars, such as the Super20 and Super25, and even the Spyder that is visible in one of those pictures. Most of their concept cars are LHD, including the last four ND MX-5's shown. I wouldn't doubt that they made some test mules that used aftermarket components and deviated from their established components. Why do you think the bodykit isn't MazdaSPEED OEM?
Yep. The hood is the same and you will need to do some wiring on the fogs and such as well. Not hard though, the rear is a bit harder because you have to cut the metal for the tail light openings to fit the S2 tails and you need the S2 rear bumper and brackets. Overall easy though.
Side note, I was in Cali last September and tried for two days to get into the garage museum. I kept getting the same woman on the phone whom insisted she had no idea what I was talking about and refused to ask anyone else. It isn't really open to public, but Mazda has always been friendly to their enthusiasts, so I was hopeful the right person would be inviting.
Thats blue car is Mazda's car. It had a turbo and sat out for all the world to see at 7stock, 2 different years I think. Most people didnt realize what it actually was but a few intrepid folks (hmmm) made a point of figuring it out after seeing the boost guage . someone (cough rotarygodcough cough) might have even felt it up through the wheel well to find the downpipe...
then of course there was the white "renegade" supercharged one. I actually held most of that one in my hands after digging out the header from a closet and the intake mani and sc from the back of a shelf. i had pictures on here of those parts

I feel like there are some missing pieces to this story. You had the supercharger on a shelf?

This is the one I remember. It was on the cover of Speed magazine. Boy did I want that thing to come out bad. (and still do!)
yeah i still love that bumper. the blue one was on hand at 7stock 7 and 8 i think, so 2004 and 2005. I forget which one had the "Renegade" sitting in the Mazda lobby(maybe 13?). Later myself and RG and a few others got to dig around a place where lots of Mazda projects get put together and tested. The parts I mentioned were sitting around having been taken off the white car by that point. I found them gathered them together and took some pics.
hahahah i foudn my old pics they're only 8 years old HAHAHA and i had to find them by digging through like 8-9 months of my posts... which is alot ... really alot.
NNN EEE way here's the pics of the sc and intake from the white car . when you see hands/arm in the pic those are mine. the one combined is a comparison of the REnegade SC UIM and the one from Esmeril. I thought it interesting that the route each chose was so similar
