I started to get a slight engine sputter under hard acceleration, so I decided to go through the troubleshooting threads. I was going to clean the MAF, change the air filter and go further down the list of items. The compression test done on 1/30/16 was good, BTW.
When about to change the air filter, after removing the engine plastic cover, I noticed the following thing:
What is this part, and its function? It's to the left (car facing you) of the airbox. Also, is the gunk-looking thing normal, or was it some patch job?

PS - I did change the air filter and clean the MAF.
