R3 wheels vs OEM S1 18x8 for Track Use
I been digging around trying to get the weight of the R3 vs the S1 18', can't get a exact number or idea if they are better performance for track use. I know that 19' will cost more as in general, the bigger the tire, the more money it cost but i'm not so concern about that. I only track 3-4 times a year and so far I haven't had the need to change my tires too quick. I just don't want to purchase the R3 wheels and de-optimize my setup now. Thoughts guys? Thanks.

Generally speaking a shorter sidewall will give you better response and better feedback, but the tire manufacturer will matter too. I just wouldn't want to go of track and mess up the r3 wheels haha.
Keep the 18s and run them as a dedicated track setup perhaps? That's what I did for a while before getting 17s |
R3 wheels are around 20 lbs. They're big, but they're forged. Stock S1 18s are a couple of pounds more IIRC.
Something else to consider besides overall mass: When something is rotating, mass counts more if it's farther from the center. Most of a wheel's mass is usually in the barrel, and 18s will have a smaller barrel than 19s. So, even though the R3 wheels are a tad lighter, the S1 18s might be equal or better in terms of rotational inertia. Tough call between the two for track use. I don't know what I'd pick. However, you can probably get good lightweight 18s for the price of even a curb-rashed set of R3 19s. FWIW. |
