Lowering Springs: Go or no go?

I have a 2009 mazda rx8 wanting to lower it 1.8 inches lower. Good idea or bad? I do plan on buying some Koni shocks in about a month or two!

RX8Soldier 04-19-2012 04:49 PM

yes or no. That is my answer.
If you want me (or others) to be more specific, please specify your question

KGR 04-19-2012 04:51 PM

Is it a good idea is what im asking

Atilla 04-19-2012 04:53 PM

to be more specific...it could be a good idea...but also a very bad idea.

KGR 04-19-2012 04:53 PM

I heard that changing the springs will cause the shocks and other suspension parts to ware out quicker, and i want to add some koni shocks in about a month or two so i wont have to worry about the shocks going bad. Do i need to look at anything else before putting the springs in, anything in the suspension category.

KGR 04-19-2012 04:54 PM

How can it be a good idea? and how a bad one?

Atilla 04-19-2012 04:58 PM

...just get the springs n' shocks or get coilovers if you have the money. This really should be a no brainer. Lowering the car/changing the suspension is a VERY common modification.

wrightcomputing 04-19-2012 05:39 PM

If you want to lower it 1.8" then I would go coilovers, then if you realize that is too low for the road conditions you can lift it a little to get the perfect height.

Moby 04-19-2012 08:05 PM

Keep in mind that if you want to go with lowering springs you will have to do something about the rear shocks. If you want to get the correct drop don't with the konis. Also, I wouldn't recommend dropping it 1.8", that would be very impractical on the road. Try around an inch.

Jake33 04-19-2012 08:50 PM

save and get coilovers!

wrightcomputing 04-19-2012 09:54 PM

I recently bought a set of stance coilovers of Adam@THMotorsports he is a vendor on here and will hook you up with a good price. Not sure what stock ride height is but I am currently at about 13" all round (center of wheel to fender). I could go lower but i cannot get off my drive and they will rise above stock if you wanted too.

Are they any good? Good enough to get me 2nd place at the Porsche club on Sunday and the guy who beat me is a National champion.

hey dude, i ordered sprint springs(2inch drops yoo), gonna install next month after school lets out. ill post pics in the CA:MGM Rx8's

for kgr... I dont know what you are asking.

Its good that your car wont be a skyscraper anymore..

its bad that your wheels will look sunken in without spacers/ new wider wheels

its bad that you might scrape

its bad that your shocks will wear out

go up and down youre driveway and have someone measure how much clearence you have. Use that number to figure out how much you can drop the car.

this is all generic information that i learned by researching and not just starting a random thread and have people spoon feed me information. Like i said in your last thread, there are 2 STICKIES on this topic, one with springrates and technical information, and one with names of the springs and pictures of how much they drop the car.

not to mention dozens of these lowering spring questions that have been asked time and time again.

In the words of toretto, if you cant find the right answer in this forum Mr. Arizona, you dont belong near a car.

^apparently not because RIWWP shows you how to multiquote and edit your post.

theres no need for making multiple posts, its to keep the clutter down.

KGR 04-21-2012 12:29 PM

^ okay I'm done talking to you, your just a scumbag! Go bother another thread..

Some posters are just harsh around here brotha , lol , you'll get used to it ... or maybe not, but either way I did the S - Tein Springs and I love 'em. Look very nice , and give the car a nice drop. You'll notice a little rougher ride but it's not terrible ... just like with any other sports performance type suspension really. I think it's a nice upgrade and much more affordable than coil overs .... I'd still go with the springs, I just don't think the extra money is worth it for the coil overs but that's just me.

KGR 04-23-2012 03:33 PM

thanks bro, really appreciate it! how much lower did they make your car?

No prob .... you know what , though , i'll be honest ... i really didn't measure it or anything .... but if i had to guess i'd say atleast a couple inches. Just make sure if you put on the springs or you have someone else do it that they preload the springs. Look it up on here, there's a whole thread on it .... but you'll get the most drop out of your springs that way.
