Window having difficulty operating???

A couple days a go my drivers side window started acting up. As i rolled it down it made a funny buzzin noise and only rolled down half way. When i tried to roll it back up it hesitated and got stuck. Finally i had to pull up on the window while holding the button up. Went to mazda and the service associate said it could be the regulator or the motor, and or both. They bitch about how hard it was to take the door paneling off so i left. I went home took all the paneling off just to make sure all bolts, screws, clips, ect. were on right. Couldnt find an issue.....anyone got any input????? The car is only 3 years old with 40k miles on it, wouldnt think the regulator or motor would go out the fast?????

is the window tinted?
what voltage is your batt showing running/off?
do the fans for the A/C seem weak while driving?
did you test the motor whan you took the door panel of?

if not pull the panel unplug the 2 pin connector and supply +12 (no less than 12) to one side and ground to other, then viceversa the window should go up and down no problem, if not your motor could be bad . time to jump on ebay!

Juan, it's not a common issue, but can happen. Either way it should be easily fixed and pretty cheap to do. It sounds like the motor. Just shop around, it is likely that the parts needed are the same as in a 04-08 RX-8 so you should be able to get them pretty cheap. PM ash8 to determine if the parts are the same, he will be able to tell you.

I had the same thing happen to me. I installed a new regulator and problem was gone. It's a fairly easy DIY. Just be careful when removing the door panel. There is a good DIY on here forremoving the panel. I would post a link to it but I'm on my phone...

If it is the motor like 9k stated it could be fairly expensive.

sorry didn't read the whole post before I started blabbing..

I took the glass out than removed the inner panel and tried rolling it up and down to see what the problem was. It turned out the cable somehow crossed over on the spool in the regulator and bent. I would start there.

I had the same issue, it would buzz and then i would have to pull on it for it to go all the way up...the door panel is not hard to take off so f**k ur dealership for saying so...the motor is the easiest fix and was my problem, unscrew the old motor, screw in the new one and that fixed my issue. I took the old motor and pried it open, one of the plastic gears had broken and i had about 1/4 of the gear with no teeth. Which is where i probably had to pull on the window.

I just started facing the same issue as well. So it sounds like DIY should cost less then $100?
This site has it cheaper. Has anyone bought from here?
2009 Mazda RX-8 Window Regulator F15159590E

All_Day_Dre 10-07-2012 01:57 PM

i have a driver side window regulator for a series 1 RX8, i bought both the motor and regulator but only needed the motor. If it works for a series 2 then its yours for 25 bucks plus shipping

Lane03 11-19-2012 10:55 PM

Is there an easy way to tell if it's the regulator or the motor that is the cause of the problem?

ConnerClay 05-13-2013 09:22 PM

My drivers side window actually just stopped working today. When ever i try rolling it down it just makes a quiet clicking sound about 2 seconds later. It only has 30k miles on it, but i guess i'm on my way to the dealership.....

wampa007 08-06-2013 10:04 PM

I have the same issue and I replaced the regulator with no luck. When I hold the button to move the window in either direction I hear a ruffling sound like the motor is slipping. I'm willing to bet its the same issue someone had where the teeth were broken. Is there any way to just buy that one part??? Maybe I can use a 3D printer and print a new one??

chaos84 09-03-2013 12:54 PM

I was trying to leave the windows cracked, so I was probably hitting the button too much, the window got stuck with about 1 1/2" open....So I rolled the window all the way down. On the way down I heard and saw the window pop...Once all the way down, the window tries to roll up and down but barely moves, doesn't sound like the motor is just spinning and I can't pull it up by hand...did the window simply pop off track somehow?

I'm very unimpressed with the quality of these window motors. About a year ago my driver side motor broke, and then a few days ago the passenger motor dies. Luckily replacement motors are only about $60 on amazon, but I've never had this much bad luck when it comes to power windows.

I had to replace the motor after my window was getting stuck in two places. Looking at the internals of the motor you can see exactly where those two spots were.....missing teeth (see attachment).

Similar to how mine looked.

Edit: One the plus side, the replacement motors I bought on Amazon are made by Dorman, which has a lifetime warranty.

I think this window motor issue (stripped gears) is excatly whats going on with mine. Thank you wampa007 and Lane03. No way to replace just the gear or go the lifetime amazon route?

Lane03 10-21-2013 01:37 PM

It looks like replacing the entire motor is the only option, as I couldn't find just the broken gear available for sale separately. If you do find just the gear, please post it here so others can save some money.

Here are the links for the motors on amazon.com

Passenger side:

Those are the exact motors I bought to replace both my driver and passenger side motors on my 2009 RX-8. They looked identical to the OEM ones, even the font and placement of the model numbers (G22C5858X) was the same. Perhaps Dorman is the OEM for Mazda window motors? Regardless, they were cheaper than from the dealer, fit perfectly and have a lifetime warranty.

parnellj48 10-22-2013 02:23 PM

my issue was fixed with the dorman window motors on both sides. I also noticed identical model numbers stamped on the motor. thank you for the cheap fix. knowledge is power!

Freakmanultra 07-28-2014 02:45 PM

My 07 driver window started doing the grinding and stopping every 1/3 of travel.
O'Reilly has refurb motors with better quality gears for $50-60 after core.

Trev Limiter 10-06-2020 08:36 AM

I ordered just the gear wheel for $7:
Pry the motor open to replace the gear wheel. That fixed it, but only for 21 months. Then I started having exactly the same problem with the same window. You get what you pay for, I guess! Oh well. If I'd gone to the dealer, they would have charged more than $500 for parts and labor on a new window motor.

Or, to be safe, you could spend a little more on this kit that has all the motor's internal parts:
