Squeeing / Tweeting noise on cold pull off
 

Well since i got the R3 shortly after i heard this tweeting noise...

It also has a puffy noise which i thought was the exhaust at the front but mazda said no its fine.......... :mad:

Basically its been to mazda 3-4 times now and the last time they said its fine nothing to worry about which pis8ed me rite off...

Now my warranty has ran out and dont think ill be renewing as the warranty is crap and not worth it imo.

Has anyone had either of these issues and fixed? Many thanks in advance

EDIT.. Must add this only happens when cold mainly, never really heard it on hot... Also mainly happens when the revs drop from pulling away on clutch..

That's a weird one. So once it's warmed up it's fine? Does it only do it as you are letting up on the clutch pedal?

Basically i havent heard it when warm i tried the other night and got a very very very slight tweet but hardly a sound....

Yes it only does it on cold when the engine drops like under load from trying to keep going if that makes sense.. And yes with the clutch letting up mate.

Our clutches tend to be noisy, that is just the way it is. It may be resolved at a later date when you replace the clutch. You should also not really drive it cold, rotaries needed to be warmed up before you drive it.

Yea was thinking it could be a clutch problem really.. The release bearing is noisey too..

Well you should be limited anyway from revving that high and your R3 tach should change color when you are warmed up to le you knwo how high you can go. But just keep in mind, I have gauges and even with an aftermarket oil cooler setup with a oil thermostat (routes oil back to the engine until it reaches 180F) and my turbo adding heat to the oil it still takes 10 full minutes of idling to get my oil temp gauge to move off of the lowest 120F mark. And that is in South Texas with very warm temps.

Yea it is limited indeed mate. I never thrash it cold, i treat it like a turbo powered car like my old GT4 so always gentle till warm.. And it is pretty cold here too so i might start leaving to warm up befroe going straight off... Thanks pal

OP you are almost labouring the cold engine while idle up (1800 RPM cold choke) is on to almost stalling the engine, IE. not enough gas pedal when taking off, so you are getting a cold exhaust system flexing, chirp.

Let it warm up a little more first and try not to let revs drop when you take off.

IMO once exhaust is hotter, after say 1-2 minutes BEFORE you drive off the noise wont happen.

My last thought is a chirpy throw out or clutch thrust/release bearing....only when cold...but I still think it is exhaust and not enough throttle...that is why Mazda did not hear it.

cheers for your reply mate. Mazda did hear the noise and the blowy type noise from the car but said it's fine... car does it everytime without fail and the tweeting stops on hot but puffy noise stays but.only hear it when engine drops or pulling off...

from now on I'll just let it warm up.. some said it could he secondary air pump some clutch and others with the puffy noise manifold or gaskets for exhaust... I'll warm the car up and get a vid of the puffy noise if possible.

it's completely standard whole car is apart from panel filter

Just going to throw these out there (and sub'd to thread for interest)

1) I expected to hear the Chirp or Tweet you get sometime on startup. During Jeff's webinar (MM) he discussed it briefly and said that it was knock. Don't know if this is true, just say what I've been told. The noise I'm referring too does sound much like what I hear in this video. However it only occurs 1 or 2 times at startup.

2) The noise also sounds like metal rubbing together (as mentioned) is it possible for a bad motor mount to make this noise?

Could be an accessory belt, or maybe the sound of the clutch discs slipping past each other as you pull away.

funny thing. I also get this clutch chirp when cold. its been like that since I bought it at 5k miles and it still does it at 20k. I think its just the material they use in the clutch that chirps when cold. nothing to worry about.

Sounds like the throwout bearing to me personally - We fondly refer to this as a "turkey call". When the car is warmed up, it goes away. This is very evident on Hondas when the clutch is replaced. If you do not use the OEM TOB, you will hear this noise for some reason.

I will see if my R3 does this, I have noticed the clutch is noisy!

OP- What panel filter are you running? I am looking for a foam filter and having no luck. Thanks!

Been having another think about this and it 'may' be worth a try....

If you can get your car up in the air (a little, or jack up) try spraying some WD40 on cold exhaust at the 'mid pipe' to 'CAT joint', (see sketch 40-582) these are two springs that could be steel rubbing/flex when cold.

Lets us all know how it goes, remember to apply plenty on both sides, leave for a while before car start up.

Yes, most will burn off, however it might just give you enough time to hear if this is the culprit.
Possibly tightening the two nuts will also help.

my 04 had that same chirp when taking off cold.. my S2 (2010) does the same thing.. only notice it when im backing out of the garage on a cold morning.. yep, right when I engage the clutch to move back/under load. 75k on my 04, and 18k on my 2010, never was anything more than just a chirp.. turn the radio up and zoom zoom on (=
