So what is going on with wheel bearings?

Hey all, its been a LONG while but I'm back for now lol.

Was doing winter maintenance and found my LF wheel bearing was starting to feel like crap, so needless to say I am going to replace it, and normally I do them in sets (just did the fronts in the DD Protege last year) but this kinda has me asking questions....

2010 MAZDA RX-8 1.3L R2 Wheel Bearing & Hub Assembly | RockAuto

Why in the actual hell are sets W/DSC more then non DSC? Keep in mind if its not timken or OEM I won't buy it (trust me on this people.)

Still will probably still roll with this price but was just wondering.

Just one of those great mysteries in life, that will forever go unanswered.:dunno:

Base model (sport) 8's that do not have DSC/TC buttons do not have dynamic stability control (DSC) or traction control (TC). If your car has DSC/TC get the DSC/TC wheel bearings. If not, then don't.

side question - how many miles and what type of driving do you do? I had my front left give out on me after about 57k - that was with occasional track use, with my favorite track being a CW track fwiw...

It was my DD for about 1.5 years while an autocross/time trial/HPDE car so about 61k is not hateful I would say.

Btw did order a timken replacement and have always had good luck with them, but this time has been the exception, less then 400 miles and an alignment its worse then it was before in regards to play....... So have to call Rock auto and find out WTF I need to do to get money back or a new one.

Mine have 41K miles on them, and that includes about 90 track hours in both directions, but most are CCW. Still good.

I use Timken hubs on my Miata, because they come with NTN bearings. They seem to last about as long as OEM, which is about 20 track hours. Sad to hear about Timken on the 8. I probably would have gone that way, when mine eventually failed, had I not read this thread.

Mazdaspeed Motorsports has OEM for $133, IIRC. Parts.com has them for around $150.

Mine have 155k+ on them in almost 14 years, and locally I have never replaced or known anyone locally to replace a wheel bearing on an RX-8. But I have an R3 parts car with 9k on it if anyone needs them.

OK, so 9K cursed me. Put a stethoscope on mine this evening, and they are both crunchy. New OE hubs on the way from Mazdaspeed. Oh well.
