Series II Oil Drain Plug

At my last oil change at the dealership, they told me Im going to need a new oil drain plug by my next visit. Im just ify that i do because Im only at 30k. But anyways should I stick to the genuine oil drain plug or is there any good ones out there in the aftermarket????. I have researched a little bit and found out that GReddy has one for about $15 USD. Something about a magnetic oil drain plug, greddy says it can "help reduce the amount of abrasive materials in your engine, while extending the life of your engine." No need to get fancy. The oil pan already has a sump magnet. Grab oem, save the money for something else.

Agree with Paimon, go OEM, it is not the same as Series 1 or any other Rotary.

The S2 uses a Hex Key Drain Plug P# FS50-21-249 and about $4.00 and sits flush or level with Oil Pan outer.

As Paimon said you already have an internal donut shaped magnet inside your Oil Pan.

The GReddy one pictured is for S1, not S2.

Why is the dealer recommending a new drain plug? Is the hex fitting in your original one damaged?

I've done 10 oil changes on my car, and the drain plug fitting is still like new. I haven't even replaced the washer, and it never leaks.

I've not once replaced any of my oil plugs/washers in any of my vehicles I've owned...haven't had a single leak or issue with them.

I s'pose there are exceptions if there actually is a leak, but if there isn't then I wouldn't become concerned with it.

yea i will stay with the OEM. As for why i need a new one. idk :( mazda dealership tech advised me to replaced it on my next visit which is in 2 days. oh well. its just 7$. Thanks for the help guys!

I guess 'someone' has rounded off the "Hex" inside the Drain Plug?...really all it can be, unless the thread has been crossed (doubt it).

I will ask the service tech to let me see the OEM oil drain plug. just to see that i am not getting ripped off. I asked them why so soon? all they said was 'just common wear and tear'. Jerks, i bet one of the techs that previously did my oil change screwed it up.

does the GReddy oil pan inclusive of the GReddy magnetic oil drain plug?

fyrstormer 07-12-2012 01:03 PM

The oil pan already has a magnet in it? Cool! That's good to know.
