With luck they will replace the dash cover as well, as they get the H-shaped cracks after ~4 years. Hoping it is now only available assembled with the dash, kind of like how we can no longer buy the coolant bottle without the cap...

I just hope they don't screw anything up when they replace them, mine sits in the garage when not driven, so my dash is crack free

I now doubt this is likely. I hadn't researched the recall before, as it didn't affect either of my vehicles. The recall is just for the igniter, which they can replace independently and not part of an entire assembly. Damn.

I can tell you now you will not get a new passenger AB dash cover, it is not part of recall, the inflator behind the cover is..

Latest News..

For USA... the new Recall will be 9416E, for 2004-2011 RX-8.

The expansion applies to Takata ammonia nitrate-based propellant front air bag inflator without a chemical drying agent, also known as a desiccant.
For Mazda vehicles, this applies only to passenger frontal air bag inflators in certain models and model years, Side Curtain, In Seat and Seat belt Pre-tensioner inflators are not made or supplied by Takata.

As usual MNAO never thinks this through and has said nothing yet if this recall applied to Drivers Side Inflator as of now the talk is only about Passenger side.

• 2004-2006 MPV
• 2004-2011 RX-8
• 2003-2011 Mazda6
• 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6
• 2007-2011 CX-7
• 2007-2011 CX-9

There are limited stocks from July 2016...

Owners will be notified when to contact Mazda Dealer..

FAQ (Pdf) added in post #1.

Edit: You will not receive a new AB cover on passenger side of dash if it is cracked, inflator is securely mounted behind this (obviously) and is not effected by a seam crack in the dashboard skin.

Just went to Mazda with my 09 R3. They ran the VIN and said there's no recall in the system yet. This is up in Canada though...

As a Mazda MX-5 (NC) owner, a little unusual that every Mazda Model of these vintages has has Air Bag inflators done EXCEPT the NC MX-5 (Worldwide)?....anyone know why?

My Drivers Steering Wheel on my S2 RX-8 and MX-5 are identical to look at, same part number clock spring.

S2 AB recall does only apply to Passenger Side AB though.

CONFIRMED: For Series II RX-8 the recall ONLY pertains to the PASSENGER Dashboard side Air Bag INFLATOR ONLY, it DOES NOT apply to the Drivers Steering Wheel Air Bag as the S2's had a changed steering wheel design/style (same as what NC2 MX-5 Miata uses) and that DRIVERS side AB Inflator is made by a different company, NOT Takata.

In Australia I have received my first ever Mazda recall notice for my S2 PASSENGER Side TAKATA AB Inflator replacement.

S2 Drivers AB Inflators are made by a different company and are NOT subject to any RECALL or replacement.

I work for Mazda as a DSM in the MWR. I own 3 Mazda's CX7-Rx8 and a speed 6. All my cars have the recall for takata including the control arm for the 7 and 8 and the fuel pump recall for the 8.

I encourage all to have their recall for the takata finished before 12/31/2017 because NHTSA is pushing for 100% completion rate from all manufactures by then for the 1417G ( Use to be 8215H) and 9416E.

If Mazda cant get near the completion rate then they will be subject to a fine from NTHSA that will hurt Mazda more than a company like Honda or Toyota. Mazda is only a 2% market holder in US car sales.

It is not Mazda fault concerning TAKATA made 'Inflators', to fine the 3rd party is somewhat contestable and draconian.
ALL in the Auto industry are fully understanding and supportive to meet Government installation goals.

BUT!. Takata is the supplier who is at fault here (and partially owned by Honda).
They have gone missing in the supply chain, making 60 million units on demand is an impossibility.

Here in Oz Mazda (Takata) has allocated names for the initial OEM installations, called them the 'Alpha' units.
The replacement and 'updated' inflators are called Beta, these Betas are said to last up to a 10 year life span and 'will need renewing again'.......................

the saga continues...

The replacement inflators were the same inflators they just have a packet to absorb the moisture to give them anotehr 10 years of life down the road and not corrode the tube. The ammonium nitrate is what caused the rust of the tubes around the inflators.

Takata has filed bankruptcy and autoleve is now taking over the recall. The new inflators no longer use the ammonium nitrate and come with a new bracket. air bags are to only last for 10 years and should be replaced regardless. I see to many people pulling air bags out of salvage yards instead of buying a good new replacement.

Really, nothing?

Here they are going crazy as the Federal Government are saying Automakers are too slow and only 17% of cars have had the Alfa inflators renewed. They are going to be fined (talk of) if they are not renewed withing 36 hours of notices going out to owners.

Typical politicians have not got a clue about logistics and manufacturing, lets make 60 million inflators overnight.

Mazda 2,3 and MX-5 /Miata uses a different brand.
Series 2 RX-8 is only for Passenger side unit.

Nope, nothing in Canada yet for S2s. No recalls according to both Mazda Canada and Transport Canada.

Not sure when Mazda Canada will take actions. Hmm, should I contact Mazda Canada and bring it up?
