roughish sound feeling
ok got my new 2010 r8 r3, just had its first oil change at 2800 miles with mob 1 synthetic, 5w20, now it has done this 2 times so far, when it is really cold
i will start it and all is fine, i will let it warm up for a min or so and then just give a lil gas to say 3-4k rpm's, and the first time if give it gas, it is rough sounding and feeling, almost a little clunking, but after the first time i give it gas it is perfectly fine afterwards. is this normal? do i need to let it warm up more before giving gas? any recommendations. should i stop worrying? |
why rev your engine when it isn't up in temp, nor under load?

i let it warm up a little till my first rev bar goes away then just give some gas. but more or less curious on the noise or whats going on, its easy for me not to rev it but is there an underlying issue or is it normal |
"Rough" or "clunking" does not sound normal. The only sound difference you should notice when the engine is cold is the higher idle speed and the whirring of the air pump for maybe 30 seconds (helps burn off rich exhaust mixture and warm the catalyst).

I don't think this is the issue, but just as an fyi for the OP
There is a 5500 rpm rev limit until the coolant has reached 68f edit --- Another reading fail ---- Just noticed this was a 2010 I'm not sure if the S2's have the same limit but I would suspect they do |

OP you really need to do some reading up here first...

also why do so many people just post "do some reading" use the search" etc etc, u guys just try to get your post counts up? why not try and help. or here is a idea. dont post anything? but i rev'd it with very light gas for maybe a second, and the roughness was very slight but was gone after the initial rev. only happened twice. so i figured i would ask on here for some assistance as i was unable to find any myself. if i didn't search correctly or read enough i appologise for forcing you to come into my post and read what i posted and then forced u to post a useless post offering nothing at all. but to those that attempted to help me thank you |

People get tired of repeating themselves. But it's your choice whether you want to wait the problem out and hope it was just a break-in issue (which could happen) or if it might be something more serious that needs checked out. |

I also don't understand why he needed to be called out about "reading-up". It seems to be a rare and unusual condition, and I don't see how searching would have helped him. |

I don't see how "roughness" or "clunking" is some kind of a break-in issue. Something sounds wrong, unless his description is misleading. Also, it doesn't appear he is operating the car inappropriately when cold. 3-4000 rpm after a minute warm-up is nothing, even on a cold motor.

It seems to be a rare and unusual condition, and I don't see how searching would have helped him. maybe it was bad gass or an odd issue, or something to due with just getting oil changed, but i was not sure what it was so i figured i would ask. but so far it is gone, the car drives with no issues and is smooth as butter, and the roughness (best way i can describe it) only last but a second or 2 and then it was gone completely. best way i can describe it would be it almost felt like the rotors would flop as they where going around if that makes any sence. |
curious what made you decided on using Mobil 1?
did the dealer say anything about using synthetic avoiding engine warranty? |
