Power drops at 6500-7000 and comes back

So when I take my car, 09, to redline WOT it has good pull and power till about 6500 and then it seems to plateau for just a little bit then the power comes back. From what I searched and read it could be plugs maybe but seems those impacted the whole upper and or lower range. Car has 16K on it. Its not critical but thought I would ask. I am sorry if this has been covered a bunch and please point it out if it already is. Not really sure what to search...

nohc 09-16-2011 08:26 PM

Oops. I found it.
https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ght=loss+power
Seems that it is most likely ignition related. I will research it. I know fold said 20K is the life and I am close, plus I have no idea what kind of driver had it the first 15K. After more reading, gonna check the ignition, cat, and I noticed the battery had some corrosion dust so will clean that up too. I will report my finding in case someone uses this thread one day.

mine drives like a dream at 20k.

Well, I did an ECU reset and that seems to have fixed it! Has more power now than ever. Maybe just needed that after the cat back and intake change. Running like a champ now.

Don't always assume that a Series I fix will apply to an S2...it is a mistake to do so.

Any high RPM breakdown is usually and always Spark Plug related first.,,sticking SSV second.

I am convinced so many have renewed coils and plugs together when it was only necessary (in some cases) to renew spark plugs only.

Yeah I will followup on the plugs. Thanks for the help.

TeamRX8 09-18-2011 12:24 AM

it can just as easily be fuel too; fuel pump, fuel pump high speed relay, injectors

9 out of 10 times people here are simply guessing at a misdiagnosis and swapping parts needlessly, so take most of it with a bag of salt

Since when has "please" been "blunt", the reason I suggest it is it helps those of whom you ask for help to interpret what you are asking, and it kinda speeds up the process, like your RX-8's year and transmission type in a Sig.

Any internet forum can only advise, correct diagnosis is not always easy, IMO it is always easier to start looking at what is common rather what could be a remote or less known issue, in so many things it is better and easier to start at the source (ignition) and work back...Yes it "could" be Fuel Pump related, however, I seriously doubt that as the FP in S2's is a later improved generation and is not know to give any issues for S2's like in Series 1's...it is only <3 years old.

I had edited my post right after. No worries. I am still getting use to the culture here.

Also didn't realize why the signature was important until I read other peoples and makes sense. Thanks for the help and suggestions on this. It seems to be fixed for now but I will reference this in the future if needed.

Is there a different path the intake air could be by passed, I have always got that same feeling around that rpm, and it feels like a kind of ajustement the engine makes to be able to reach the higher rpm range

ASH8 09-19-2011 04:26 PM

No.

Its called your SSV actuator opening up....might be a bit slow?

I had mine stick, once, for a split second, that was an extremely humid day...plus heat.

I don't think S2's will be immune from being cleaned (the SSV)...at some stage of their life.

So, any easy way to clean that?

I'd noticed that on my dyno and have been looking change that to a smooth line. If I could get rid of the drop I have a 6200, I'd be feeling much better. Heck, could we just "stick" the SSV open? :D

I read that one of the turbo kits opens the valave at 500RPM on an S1. Would that work for us?

Check this out from Jon...he posts EXCELLENT DIY Videos...

Knows more about them than I..

Intake Manifolds are not exactly the same in S2's BUT, all the basics are with some slight changes.

My engine has always plateaued a bit around 6500-7000rpm. It feels like it's about to run out of air, and then it doesn't. My understanding is this lag is caused by waiting for the third set of intake ports to open.
