Mazda 'C' Ignition Coils...Updated.
 

Mazda has released updated RX-8 Ignition Coils for ALL Series RX-8's.

N3H1-18-100C

Came into production on the Spirit R's and 2012 MY.

Mazda Part's interchangeability code is 'A' ,meaning one way use only, new part (the C coil) for install in old models but not old part (the A or the B coils) install in new model (Spirit R or 2012 MY).

The 'C' s are more expensive (@ around $100 each).

Eventually they will be available locally once the B's have been supply exhausted.

EDIT: IF you are looking for OEM (Genuine Mazda) COILs for your RX-8 of ANY YEAR or Series then
there is only ONE Updated Coil to buy new now, that is N3H1-18-100C (for/in any country).
BUT for North American MAZDA DEALER PARTS it is ONLY sold under the 'B' iteration with a localized '9U' at end of Part Number.
Rest assured these COILS are the 'C' type inside the box.

At 100 each it makes more sense to just go with a BHR lol. But like ^^ said ... we dont really know what changed atm

so it's an all out swap? Any idea what's different? Let me guess... they raised them off the mounting plate? Oh wait that's what they did with the S2s.... hmm

It will be a long time before we see these C's....

For the B's @ $55 US each...2.5 years ago $33 US each.

Right at the moment can't tell you...

Mazda's supplier obviously did some updates for it to be a 'A' interchange code.

No other parts in the 2012 S2 ignition system has changed.

Maybe i can speed that up a bit . These Cs were found very quickly !

Oh snap! well, without really knowing what changed we will put those in and hopefully by the next time you can get these new ones and there will be data on them. If all they did was raise them, then..........no big deal.

Brettus you think you'll have quicker access to them being so much closer to the peninsula?

Also doubt anyone seriously boosted will want to pony up their setup to be the test bed for these. Perhaps that was the hidden sarcasm in Ray's post :)

I would certainly have no problems using them in my setup given that I had great results with the original OEM coils .
But I do have the D585's fitted now and apart from inferior starting performance they are working just fine.

Well, seriously, I hope they "finally" update the coils to something that will last at least double of what B can do ... then I guess that will make everybody happy.

They did a good job of updating the original GARBAGE to A, then made it even more stable on the B version.

C ... at 100 bux a pop, they BETTER last ...

No one, certainly not myself has suggested the new 'C' iteration of Mazda supplied RX-8 Ignition Coils are a 'performance' upgrade.

However like the plains, the A's and then B (currently sold in US) iterations these were factory listed as being an "A" interchangeability code, new for old, but not old for new, @ March 2006 and December 2007 (very last of Series 1 RX-8's) Vehicle Production.

This suggests to me that changes are possibly internal, could be material(s), plastics, and or design or both.

When they are made available they will install on the same mounting brackets and use the same Spark Plug Leads etc.

IF MNAO Parts continues to source these Ignition Coils from Japan, then I expect to see the C's possibly in 2013.

"C" Coils are now available in Australia and Europe through Mazda Parts Dealers...must be ordered as a C.

Currently MNAO has around 5,000 of the B's (B-9U) Coils still in stock so until most are sold you probably won't see the C's anytime soon.

And no, at this stage I do not have a C Coil to do a direct visual comparison, I predict all the 'updates' are internal and externally their appearance is exactly the same...but I could be surprised.

Ordered new coils for my Series 2 at Rosenthal Mazda. They were listed as "B" on the site but they in fact sent me the "C" coils. 265 bucks. This was 3 months ago.

I'm at 71,000 now (anyone beat that?) so I pulled one of the original coils to give it a look see. No "white spot" or anything. Its a nightmare to get at these things so I'm gonna put it off until spring. Car runs fine, although some days it feels stronger than others--for the same outside temp--so it may just be due to the gas here. Sometimes I wonder if I'm really getting super unleaded at some of these stations..

When I pulled the end of the plug wire off a part of the coil came off with it. I just put it back on. I think the C coils have this part fused on so that won't happen again.


So all those who have series 2s who are replacing coils at 30-50k you are wasting your dough!

Beefy did you do an actual test on your coils, because having a white spot or not means nothing according to other threads. They degrade over time so they are definitely not working like new ones anymore, it is just a matter of how degraded they are. Lots of people have had luck with coils lasting a long time but for me it is cheap insurance that I have a good spark.


How many times have you changed your plugs so far?


The coils are actually pretty easy to get to you just have to either remove the intake or just pull it to the side.

Nope. I'll get around to it shortly, maybe if we have a couple days in the 50s or something. Its easy enough I justy have no room with my big hands. Change the plugs every 25K, so I'm almost due for a 3rd set.

Couple other updates...I'm back on the stock suspension after TWO aftermarket suspension failures. Trying to get used to the softness and body roll, but its not easy..

And I have perfected the thru the wheelwell oil change with 2 separates cap style wrenches and a midget ratchet. MUCH better/easier than lying under the car and undoing that blasted plate underneath. Plus, this way you're nowhere near all the old oil as it falls from the old filter..

Where do you live? I'm hoping for some days in the 50s as well, its been really cold for out here at 30-40 degrees and windy.

So do you have an oil pump then? When you remove the filter where does the oil drain to, do you just end up with oil all over something? I know you can crawl under there and there is a hole for the drain plug but I never noticed where the filter would drain to if you didn't remove the metal plate.

Just put in the "C" coils, along with new plug wires and plugs @ 72K and.....it feels and sounds just like before.

Pretty easy job, except for the dropping of 2 of the 10mm coil nuts into the engine bay--lost forever. Just happened to have a couple spares in my toolbox..Arms are all scarred. Plug wires were a cinch from below with the car on ramps. I might try to do the plugs next time from below, instead of using 22" worth of extensions thru the wheelwell lol.

This part does not exist according to the four dealerships that I called.
