Low Coolant Light
 

So I was driving on the HWY the other day (about 80 or so) in sixth gear and my low coolant light came on for about 10s, as soon as it came on I slowed down (there was nowhere to stop) and it went off. Once I was home and the car cooled down, I checked the coolant level and it was fine (just under the cold level, I added a little coolant anyway to just over the cold level). The next day I was just driving down the street, nothing crazy, just normal 45mph in 5th and the light came on again for a few seconds. I havent driven it since and it goes to the dealer for the airbag recall so I will ask them about it.

Any ideas what is going on?

Could be a faulty coolant level sensor on it's way out.

Very common occurrence, the coolant level sensor goes out. Only way to fix it is to replace the bottle with the sensor (sensor not sold separately) Mazmart is good source for the bottle and sensor at good price. Mazmart just posted RX8 club thread on lower prices. See link.

Some folks here just unplug the sensor to stop the warning light, and then do regular visual level inspections. That is risky, for if your level is down and you havent checked it, you could risk an overheated engine. Coolant sensor going out happens to loads of RX8 owners. Best advice is just to bite the bullet and replace it.

Just a little correction. The sensor is incredibly simple and unless you somehow physically break it, it will work for a long time.

The float in the tank that the sensor detects however does degrade and becomes less buoyant and sinks, thus tripping the sensor.

I replaced the tank about 2 months after buying my 8, haven't had an issue since.

Join the group, I have had to replace mine also in my 2008 40th anniversary edition.

So finally got around to replacing my coolant tank (note to anyone else, it is far easier if you remove the battery and battery holder). While trying to figure how to get to the hoses to remove, I loosened the screw in this photo and whatever was pressurized in there leaked out for about a half a second, what is this the aluminum thing with the "H" on top?
