Gas Gauge Reading Wrong

Long story short, I keep running out of gas before my gauge is empty.
So last week this started at 2am heading back from work. I was headed to the local QT to get gas as my handy yellow light had just popped on. As my gauge got to the last bar, it died suddenly, and I had to pull over. I know it was nothing major because I walked to the QT and got a gallon and she fired right back up and got me to the station.
Sunday, same situation, it died right after the handy yellow light came on with roughly 2 bars of gas left.
Now tonight, at 2am again, it died before the yellow light even came on with 4 bars of fuel on the gauge.
Every time this happens, a little gas fixes it right up.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you fix it? The only thing I can think of for why it got so bad this week is that I just took my car to Mazda on Tuesday so they could do the recall for the fuel pump (which they didn't even finish, and I still have to bring my car back in 20 days for the rest of the parts).
Is there a way to calibrate or reset the fuel gauge or the tank monitor?

most problems are common and easily resolved with some self-effort

Just replace the sender
same problem with mine, I just ordered the whole pump w/sender since I’m at 100k

be advised that there are two senders; one on each side of the RX8’s saddlebag fuel tank.

So it won’t do any good to replace the one on the fuel pump side if it’s the one on the other side.

Be advised that the Series 2 fuel tank sender units are not the same part or part number as the ones used in Series 1s.

My fuel gauge also reads wrong, where just 1 tiny bar under 1/4 is the true empty. It's not a problem for me anymore, but it's odd this happened after the fuel system was serviced by a dealer... Ended up running dry and killing my fuel pump at midnight.

mine is the same. As soon as I hit a quarter tank or just above, I have to stop and get fuel.
