Hi Flying 8 06-08-2018 01:56 PM

front harness locks and rear door won't open

I have search repeatedly and have found nothing.

Often, when I attempt to open the rear doors, the locking mechanism on the front belt locks and the rear door won't open. I have to work the belt back and forth until it either releases partially or sometime completely. Is there a pendulum mechanism that locks the harnesses when the car lurches forward? Because this happens on both sides, I feel there must be a single unit that controls both locking devices.

All help will be appreciated.

Pretty sure the seatbelts are standard inertial reels. Pull too fast and they lock.

Try opening the doors slower.

Thanks for the advice, however, it will lock no matter how slowly I open it sometimes. Sometimes it doesn't lock up at all. This is my third 8 (previous two were series I) and I never had this problem.

Any other suggestions?

Anyone else have any input? I have had two other RX-8's and not had this problem. Opening and closing the door slowly is inconsequential. How could that work if someone had to get out of the back quickly in case of emergency?

this is obviously a faulty acting device of some sort, but does it need to be replaced or is there one device that affects both rear door locks?

The seatbelt inertial reels operate independently. You will have to replace them both if both are giving you problems.

Thanks, That isolates the problem better, but doesn't it seem strange that both are malfunctioning? Do you think that maybe they need a little lubrication due to something sticking? My Company van had one go bad, but it completely stopped locking up and I assume the locking spring/mechanism broke and I replaced it with good results.
