Does anyone actually change their oil every 5000 miles?
just curious
Even before reaching 3000 miles my oil was low and had to be filled a quart this engine seems to use oil far more than my 13b I want to follow the dealer schedule but topping off the oil twice between changes seems like a bit of a hassle, maybe it will burn less as the engine gets older? |
what year is your car? how many miles?
do you add oil every other fuel-up? |
its a 2010 about 4 months old
I have not been topping it off at the gas station do most of you do that? I just assumed I would have to check it halfway between oil changes and I noticed it was over 1 quart low around 2500 miles |
you really should stick to around 3k changes because of the oil usage the car has, and I would recommend every 2-3 fill ups to check it and youll be okay. Its known that the car drinks oil
|
I bought a 2010 GT in November and I've been carefully tracking my oil (and gas) usage.
Almost like clockwork, I use 1/2 a quart of oil every 500 miles. I follow the instructions for checking the oil in the owners manual, and add a half a bottle when the oil level reaches the 1/2 quart low mark on the dipstick. Remember, the total amount of oil in the car is around 7 quarts. Only 4 are removed during an oil change. And I guess, I add about 3 quarts every 3000 miles. Anyway, oil is cheaper than replacing an engine, so I lean toward 3000 miles between oil changes, but I could see going 5 or 6k, as long as you add oil as the car uses it. |
Here me now and believe me later, but modern oils have additives that condition the metal so changing at 3k can actually cause as much wear as going 5k or more.
Study it on BITOG.com awhile and let me know what you think. I've got several UOA's (used oil analysis) on this site that I ran 5k on Mobil 1 0w40, and the oil condition showed it could be run longer. Especially since it burns some oil its also getting lots of renewal. 5k is nothing for this car unless maybe all 5k were racing full throttle, then 3k might be the thing. |
Oil is changed every 2k.
|
I change my oil every 3 thousand miles.
|
every 5k for me - and that's with a turbo
|
I change mine every 3k miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Generally in 3 months I have driven 1500-2000 miles and the oil is filthy even then.
|
I change every 3750 miles sometimes 4000 mile. add half a quart every 500-800 miles.
|
i change mine every 3-4k with new oil filter , so far 75k on original engine
|
5000 miles
I change my oil every 5000 miles. This is based on:
|
Change mine every 3k yep
|
I don't change it every 5000 miles, I change it every 3,000.
|
8000km or three months
Add oil when I think of it... I'm adding a Sohn adaptor this spring 2004 and around 80K miles |
^ I have the Sohn its a great investment. I run Royal Purple 10w 40 now. ;)

I use AMSOil G-5 motor oil, because G-5 oil molecules have a permanent static charge that makes them stick to metal indefinitely, and I figure the rotor seals can use all the extra lubrication they can get.
I change the oil every 5000 miles and I top-off the oil when I notice it's getting low. I don't worry too much about making sure the oil is right at the "Full" mark on the dipstick, I just keep it somewhere between the middle and top marks. |

I looked and me neither, but many of the newer synthetic oil refiners have discussed how oils can be made to have more affinity for metal (adhesion qualities) than usual.
Amsoil has a way of hypeing qualities to make them seem almost magical, and as if nobody else can do magic. |

Its thought that esters are the ultimate (Redline), however, they have too much adhesion qualities so major refiners blend certan ratios of PAO and esters to get the right qualities that also don't cause seal problems. Amsoil is playing this ester quality up when a mixture is said to be better, and we're not likely to know what ratio is good for a few years. |
I planned on 3000 mile oil changes, but my wife drives very little. We have had the car since Nov 2010 and it has 1500 miles now. Would you change oil based on time OR mileage?
I care less about a bit extra cost. I want this car to last. |
Both time and use degrade your oil's properties
|
I change mine every 3k. test your oil a couple of times and see how it is doing, then choose your oil and interval from there. I run Mobil1 0W-40 and have a SOHN adapter injecting whatever JASO FD 2 stroke I can find.
|
I change mine every 1100 miles plus I also premix 2-stroke.
