I use AMSOil 5w30 (Group 5 synthetic) and my sparkplugs looked the same as everyone else's after 30,000miles of driving. Every argument I've heard about not using synthetic didn't hold up to even the basic chemistry I learned in school. I think it really boils down to: synthetic oil doesn't burn as easily, so carbon buildup is more likely if you don't rev the crap out of the engine from time to time. I'll happily take the tradeoff of increased risk of carbon buildup in exchange for better lubrication, especially as the engine ages and the oil-metering system becomes less reliable.

This is why we shouldn't be comparing regular to synthetic, we should be comparing oil groups between themselves. 'Synthetic', as a marketing term, is useless in figuring out what's in jug.

Yes there's no doubt that not all Synthetic oils are equal, some are by far better then others. I've personally been using Amsoil Synthetic oil in my Rotaries and all other vehicles for nearly 30 years now. Buy the best and you will get good results.

This is some interesting stuff. I had never heard of these different base stock groups before. Is there a way to get a list of different, common oil brands and their base stock group?

Group V oils are ester based, they burn very cleanly and make good solvents. They also have the property of sticking to metal surfaces, which means less metal to metal contact. They're usually expensive, that's all.

Just because I'm curious, I took a sample of my oil last night as I changed it. I will send it to Blackstone for analysis. I has about 1,000 miles and one track day on it. I'll post the results when I get them back.

And here it is.

Bottom line is it doesn't much matter what you use as long as you change it on an appropriate schedule for the type and viscosity of oil you are using.
