Cel light on

Hey guys,

Ive searched here high and low and have some answers but nothing conclusive.

I have a 2009 with 12,000 kms. I always use 91 octane and the oil is just below full.

My cel light has come on today. I havnt noticed a power drop or any odd reving or noises.

I have also made sure the gas tank cap is tight.

I am going to take it in to mazda tomorrow morning to see what they say.

Any ideas from the forums?

craiggger 12-16-2012 05:03 PM

Oh yea, and do you guys reccomend getting a code reader?

xexok 12-16-2012 06:24 PM

Mazda is going to charge you more than a code reader costs to read your code once, so yes you should get one before you take it there. Read the code yourself and then post what it is here or do what I said below and post it.

If you live where there are autozones, checkers/o'reillys, or advance autos they will read the code for you for free.

Thanks for the reply.

Are you saying that even though the engine is still under warranty, they will charge me to look at it!?! That's sucky.

xexok 12-16-2012 10:11 PM

Call and ask them, they may not. I know in the past I have been told they will charge me X amount to check it out and if it turns out it is warranty work then they will refund that money.

is your Fuel Cap on tight?

if your car is still under a B2B warranty?, a Mazda Dealer can not (should not) charge you for reporting a constant CEL, if you are out of this warranty, then go to Auutozone as suggested, get the code read and come back.

do you have any aftermarket parts? if a hose on your intake has come lose for example that can cause a cel

Yes.
My idea is to wait until you have some actual information to share.

alright, thanks for the replies everyone.

I went to parts source (canadian pep boys i guess) to buy a reader. they offered to read the code for free. Came up as evap system bla bla, so that's great. Cleared the code and the light hasn't come back on. I guess i should be more aggressive with my tightening!

Thanks again for the replies. happy holidays.

Oh and Bladecutter: I came on here looking for some hints, not attitude. pce.

There are HUNDREDS of potential CEL codes, and THOUSANDS of potential causes for those codes to be set.

With absolutely NO INFORMATION from you, you some how expect us to give you a logical course of action?

You asked for ideas.
Mine was straightforward - Wait for more needed information.

It worked out.
You got the code read, which you should have before coming here and starting your thread, and took action. Complete non-issue.

So, here's to your attitude.
You earned it.

You turn your Fuel Cap until you here a few clicks...you can't over-tighten your fuel cap, but yes you MUST hear the clicks or else your cap is not installed correctly by the user/owner...will result in a CEL. (Evap Leak)

The odds are for an 8 (particularly S2) with such low mileage (7,200), that it is all the CEL really could be.

Glad it worked out.:)

Always tighten until you hear three clicks. It's a good safe number.

And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

WOW, you need to get laid. if you dont like my post then by all means stay off the post.

Nobody likes a jerk.

Thanks to the responders who have class and overall general respect for a harmless question.

You asked for ideas regarding the proper course of action. Since you had no other information besides the presence of a Check Engine Light, there was only one proper course of action: collect more information before doing anything. That is exactly what Bladecutter said. He didn't get pissy until you gave him a hard time for answering your question correctly.

craiggger 01-02-2013 01:42 PM

You wants codes real bad eh? No vague questions allowed..
