bolt size and crush washer

Ok the bolt I need to know the size of is the 6 bolts that hold on the sump cover that you must take off to get at the oil filter and drain plug.

*I went to sears and got a 12mm and it fit perfect, so thats taken care of. Just took a few trips.

Also where can I buy JUST a crush washer for the oil plug? autozone and checkers wants to sell me a whole new plug that comes with the washer and wont sell just the washers... Their computers dont even have 2009 rx8 parts listed in them, so they couldnt sell me a plug+washer like they initially told me. I remember reading about the honda s2000 crush washers fitting just fine so I got a 08 s2000 plug & washer and am just gonna throw away the plug I guess.

Also what size do I need so I can avoid the hassle of them not having it in their system, and just say "I need a xx size washer". I know the one I bought was called a 14-1.5, then another I have says 090-075.1(that was the plug+washer for a s2000). The only way I could get a washer separate was a nice guy at autozone that just popped open a drain plug package and gave me the washer.

I know a mazda dealership would have the washer, I would just prefer to avoid driving 25-30 miles to the nearest one when I should be able to go down to any store around here if I knew the correct size.

Thanks for any help, went up to the dealership today and they told me it would be $48.50 for an oil change lol, theres no way in hell I am paying that.

Almost 40 views and not a single post. :(

I think the drain plug on the 09+ rx8s is different than the ones from 04-08, thats the reason I am asking this question. From what I have read in the DIY thread for oil changes and from searching people were saying it was different, so I figured it might also be a different size. If its the same size plug and washer then at least say so, if you know.

As I said autozone/checkers has 0 things in their system for 09 rx8s so they arnt able to help me.

First, if you did some searching you would of had some answers..

The Oil Drain Plug is different on 09's, it is a FLUSH recess type and you have to use an 8 mm Hex head long spanner tool to undo.

The plug washer though is the same a Series 1 RX-8's...but the plug is not...as I said.

I will take a pic and post for you..
The crush washer is Mazda Part Number 9956-41-400
Plug part number shown in Pic..
And I also showed my 8 mm Hex Tool to undo the Plug.

BTW: The Plug you have on your car is painted BLACK...the one I show here is my spare..

no like I said I wouldnt pay $50 for an oil change, ever.

Ash I know its 8mm hex, the bolt I was asking about was for the sump cover and I figured that out myself, with 3 trips to sears.

All I needed to know was if the drain bolt on series 2 was a different diameter than series 1, and according to you its not so I can just ask for a washer/bolt from an 04-08 rx8 and be fine using just the washer.

Thank you for the pic and part number of washer. :)

Yes, the drain plug washers are the same as S1 RX-8's, in fact the same washer is used in all Mazda's used over the past 40 years.

Are the drain plugs the same size as the S-1, RX-8. not the washer but the plug that the 8MM key goes into. what is the thread size if you know. please and thank you.

I haven't measured the exact size, but they have a better design that uses a 17mm socket versus 8mm key, which was more prone to stripping.

Still have my old one sitting around so I could measure it when I get home.

Here are some pictures of them, along with the part number of the updated plug.

Would anyone happen to know the thread size for the bolts that hold on the aluminum panel that's under the engine (circled in picture)? I have 2 that locations where the threads are stripped out on the subframe. Previous owner addressed by using a slightly smaller bolt and a nut. It works OK but wrench access is a challenge. So I'm considering drilling and tapping for the the next size up from the stock bolts so I can ditch the nut and bolt arrangement.

Can’t say for sure since it’s an S2, but likely to be M6-1.00, though possibly M8-1.25 though that seems unlikely just to hold an Aluminum pan in place.

So just take one of the other bolts out and go to Home Depot. At the hardware area where the nuts and bolts are will be a thread checker tool that you can screw the bolt into to confirm size and thread.
