2011 R3 suddenly wont idle
the other day my kid called me while out with his R3 (6 speed) and said the car wont stay running....
It will start and run but you have to rev it up to keep it running, if you let foot off gas it dies. about a month ago, I replaced the coils with the BHR set w/ plugs and wires.... thats the most recent work done. I had it towed to a local shop and need to deal with it today... any thoughts on what could be going on or if anyone has seen a similar issue? Thx |

Could be vacuum leak, bad MAF, bad front O2 sensor, low compression, bad throttle body, just to name a few things. It's impossible to narrow it down without more troubleshooting.

Vacuum leak sounds likely, since you did ignition coil work and that usually requires you to remove the accordion tube.

Definitely sounds like an air fuel mixture issue at idle. I would check for an air leak in the intake tubing after the MAF or a vacuum leak.

As a consideration, I've gotten some bad coils before from BHR. I replaced with AC Delco D585 and haven't had issues since. The BHR were probably under warranty, but I didn't want the hassle of more potentially cheap coils.

I had a BHR coil that would intermittently fail under high RPM. Charles sent me a replacement Next Day with no hassle at all. They have all been fine since 2013.

Not really that much of a PIA, if you know what to look for. Thought it might be ignition-relatedl; swapped the leading and trailing coils; problem went away; tested the trailing coils; found weak coil; had a replacement in 2 days; been all good for 6 years, including a lot of track use.
Don't be disingenuous, Team. Everyone who has been around a while has seen you basically at war with BHR to the point of weirdness. |

So as the original poster I thought I would chime back in here.... the problem was definitely a vacuum leak and not at all related to the BHR coils.
Charles has been helpful and great to deal with both in setting me up with the proper mid-pipe and the coils. So, the problem was when I changed the air filter in the racing beat box, I did not properly hook up the pipe that connects to the box. it came loose on the bottom where I could not easily see it and once properly attached, the car ran and continues to run great. So all in all, Big shout out to Charles at BHR and Kyle at the rotary doctor, both those have guys have been very helpful and have bent over backwards to help an old guy new to RX-8's get his kids car in good running condition, thanks again fellas, I hope they both see this,,, |

it was never my intention to get into all that crap and am just going to go back and delete all that I can. Just the same, I have nothing against said company, recommended them to other people including engine rebuilds, always said they had great service, and frankly it doesn’t matter because they now sell an entirely different coil system. You can interpret what you want about whatever disagreements occurred on this website, but if you ever meet anyone who says I ever said anything personally derogatory to their face about either the owner or the company that person is an outright liar. . |
